Has the Vancian Magic Thread Burned Down the Forest Yet? (My Bad, People)

Im suprised that "Vancian magic" is not more common in fantasy literature. Its an elegant way of showing you the reader the approximate parameters of the wizards power, so you have that nice balance of anticipation and suspense. Its like the Q-gives-Bond-the gadgets scene.

3.5e Module Train Wreck / Opinion Thread

My thoughts (note, I have no knowledge of the adventure) youre playing an adventure path: be upfront about it, tell the players, OOC, "The next chapter is in the north, please swallow the plot hook" or whatever I wonder if the players were confused by the refugee issue. To me it seems really...

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG from Goodman Games

My concern - will the game support "open-sandboxy-old-style-campaign-play". Races as classes?: depends on the multiclassing rules.

    Is D&D stifling your creativity?

Any ruleset can only cover a small part of roleplaying gaming possibility. So, if you only know one game, and try to force all your roleplaying ideas into that rule system, then yes, it will stifle your creativity.

Images for a Dungeon Master's Screen

A graveyard with lots of big blank tombstones. On which you record the fates of dead PCs (and perhaps favoured henchmen and allies as well)

What kind of setting "fluff" do YOU want to see in an RPG?

D&D is about adventurers having adventures. Not tourism. So, setting material - no matter how nice - isnt worth a **** unless it leads to adventure, or adds a new component to the usual adventure plot tropes. Id go further and say that most setting products are made the wrong way round...

    Asymmetric gaming worlds

To the OP: a few ideas on the reconciliation i) say that only a small %age of people have the capacity for using magic. But PCs are exceptional. ii) behind the scenes, theres a delicate balance of power between the powerful casters, both arcane and divine. So, the reason Grandulf the 20th...

What are the worst classic D&D adventure modules?

The hate for "Tomb of Horrors" as a "worst" module is just grognard-baiting or ignorance. Theres other "adversarial" adventures done worse - and then theres the complete wastes of paper (eg: Gargoyle) that anybody, of any gaming style, would fnd useless.

What kind of setting "fluff" do YOU want to see in an RPG?

I want the setting material to include adventures and adventure seeds which use the settings unique features.

D&D is better for kids than Monopoly

D&D is better than Monopoly because Monopoly isnt a very good game, and usually means disappointment and bickering.

    When PCs fail.

some thoughts - generally, let the players know that its The Final Battle so they can choose heroic sacrifice - the ideal adventure is written so that failiure is fun - in the OPs example, it seems the problem is not so much that they failed, but the rubbish manner of their failiure. They...

Which of these games would you rather play (and why)?

I prefer Option 2 More open ended, sandboxy, flexible, and player led. But thats just my opinion. I can however give you an objective logical reason to go with option 2. It would be much easier, and make more in-game sense, to mutate Option2 into Option 1 than vice versa.

    Providing Meaningful Choices?

Meh. Why not just be honest and tell your players its a railroad, although there may be different carriages and different services. Now, my practical suggestions are 1) Dont save the world Do not have save-the-world metaplots. Have a lesser danger, but let the party be able to influence...

Temple of Elemental Evil - expectations

Why was T1-4 a dissappointment to me? - I just dont like Zuggotmoy. Oh no ! its a ...mushroom - I expected Nulb to be Bizarro-Hommlett - I wanted the Temple to be a believable, dynamic entity . With a supply chain and politics etc. Its always puzzled me, why didnt Gygax turn his TOE...

False dichotomies and other fallacies RPGers use

Classic Six: The Game Inside OD&D

Interesting. Ive two questions: Rather than cap at level 6, why not either : - adjust the xp tables so high level advancement is really slow - modify the xp system so that only level-appropriate challenges give any xp so 'high' level characters will only get xp by hunting down rare, legendary...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

Because there isnt anything at stake in the edition wars. We might as well debate ice cream recipes or uzbekistan politics instead. Here you go: Different rpgs - and versions of rpgs - suit different tastes. Because of D&Ds dominant position, some people get more offended than they really...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

The Edition wars are simply a matter of taste. The different editions of D&D support different styles of play unequally.
