“Really narrative D&D” - a new RPG genre?

I think there's also a split between "D&D the actual mechanical game that's gone through a number of iterations and grown to be a highly combat sub-system focused design that everybody has a favorite version of" vs "D&D, the fictional genre of related media that has grown up over the decades and...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Are you playing the playtest adventure (based on the encounters you described it sounds like it)? The Delian tomb "Start Here" packet pregens all have an excellent assortment of skills. Also, I wonder if a GM coming from a more narratively open game or who has experience running later design...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

Or, conversely, they did some deliberate planning to try and avoid excess stock based on anticipated demand and sales exceeded their projections. @Morrus can you shed some light on how long it usually takes to get a large scale hardcover print run spooled up / shipped to distributors / back in...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

I dont believe the CR business group has gone out there and announced "we plan to take X% of market share!" or "our Press unit is an utter failure unless it turns $6MM in sales this year!" or anything. Edit: the most they've said is it's a "major part" of their business plans. What you can read...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Maybe one of the “details TBD” adventures will be aimed to extend one of the starting situations stuff each frame presents into 10-15ish hours of play thing.

Trimmed down rule book? Dropping that away from a hardcover might work. There’s space for the Sablewood to become an actual set of Situations with a bunch of prompts for the GM to ask player input in how the narrative flows. A good level 1-3 flow or something, with ideas where you could go next...

Haha yeah, core sets - I’ve been looking at/talking about QuickStarts for other games and the term got crossed in my head!

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

I’m not sure what Parmendur is posting about. They seem to be gleeful about DH surpassing shadowdark for some reason, while also generally disliking DH’s actual designs or not being interested in looking at said actual design before making sweeping statements. I do think that DH was consciously...

I saw 5 starter sets at the FLGS display table I stopped in at Monday. Looks like the next batches are flowing in!

Dungeon World Gets New Owners, Second Edition Planned

If you read the blog, you can see the actual intent here and how it’s not that at all.

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

Yeah, DH definitely uses a set of consistent key words that need some definition. The good thing is that they’re pretty much all taught directly from the character sheet and its explanatory “Sidecar.” Rather confusing to read without context though!

D&D General Forgotten Realms - why do you still like running games here? +

These are what I have nostalgia for. Formative memories of fantasy play. No real connection to FR beyond that, and not the more recent stuff either.

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

You’ll be glad to hear that Daggerheart is even more simple then! Not only has it moved away from skills in favor of Action Rolls bundling a variety of potential actions under a simple attribute modifier (making it even easier to roll with a player’s ideas of how to tackle a problem), it uses...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

What wall of text? That’s 5 different active abilities - each is pretty concise, one to two sentences for an entire thing. You’ll have at most 5 of those in your loadout at any time. At level 1, you start with two chosen from the 6 your two class domains offer (plus your subclass - like most...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

This is a Level 1 skill: “WALL WALK Level 1 Arcana Spell Recall Cost: 1 Spend a Hope to allow a creature you can touch to climb on walls and ceilings as easily as walking on the ground. This lasts until the end of the scene or you cast Wall Walk again.” This is another Level 1 skill: “GET...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

No, not at all. It works fine without cards - you can write down lines on your sheet. But board game design has moved insanely past the stuff we get in TTRPGs from a usability and digest ability perspective, and smart use of tight text that gets an entire ability across in a card you can place...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

I feel like you’re tilting at windmills here, since you keep referencing things that aren’t actually part of DH’s design. @Vael ‘s post is a good walkthrough of the value add of designing card-forward, and I keep repeating that the DH designers included a play feature that genuinely works...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

…do you think DH has that? It has a Quick Reference Sheet of rules like most TTRPGs, and Cards that cover all your selectable Domain/Ancestry/Community/Subclass abilities.

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

They (WOTC) literally make spell cards for 5e? Big fat decks of them for each spell caster? And NPC & creature cards, and tons of 3pp items. DH just bundles it all in the physical copies + has PDFs of everything for free. Edit: Again, part of the genuine use of these for DH is the Recall Cost...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

No, but people like cards. And DH has a little bit of a deck building mechanic built in, so it’s even more natural to have physical objects.
