D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Case in point, the 3e cure light wound wand. Playing 3e without access to that wand (or some equivalent of it) is a NIGHT AND DAY different experience.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

There was a minor amount of attrition in 4e based on what you described, especially around the dailies. But the healing surges was more of a binary element. Losing surges wasn't a big deal, it did not stop your ability to go "full out" in a fight. But once your surges got low or to 0, that was...

Ford's Model T once made a lot of money. I'm glad they never fixed anything or improved upon it.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I will quote myself from earlier in this thread. "In a nutshell, the dnd encounter model is backwards. The model should assume that a party is at 100% juice for every encounter. And the system should be designed so that abilities mostly reset per encounter. 4e did it right in that regard...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

That is kind of like saying I don't really want my car fixed because I'm unwilling to go on youtube, learn how to rebuild an engine, buy all the parts, and do it myself. There are some things that are quick fixes, but the idea of shifting the game whole sale to an encounter based model (rather...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

There is also a baby and a bathwater scenario here. Its important to drill in on what people didn't like about the 4e solution. 1) Is it that they didn't like 4e in general, and so the fixes here (which were "good") were tossed out? 2) Is it that people like the mechanics and flavor of...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I had a game where I asked the players if they wanted to ban Tiny hut in this short series of adventurers I was doing. They decided to play it straight up. Even used it once for a pretty solid ambush. Then I used it against them....and asked them again if they wanted to keep it. Slight change...

D&D General Has 5e become noise?

yeah that was my assumption, as in terms of the "WOTC stuff", I feel its the opposite. There are so few products outside of adventurers and settings that I can't remember the last time I even looked at buying a 5e book....they are just so rare.

I think it is time for a break.

took a long break from DMing for a while (and I wasn't a player in any game so it was basically a break from gaming). let me recharge, and then I was good to go again. Happens, no shame in it.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

In a nutshell, the dnd encounter model is backwards. The model should assume that a party is at 100% juice for every encounter. And the system should be designed so that abilities mostly reset per encounter. 4e did it right in that regard. And then....attrition is a function of the encounter...

D&D 5E (2024) Bringing back the 5th level spell Far Step

I'll look at this in two ways, inside a fight and in exploration. 1) Inside a fight: As a concentration spell, its already competing with every other tom, dick, and harry concentration spell for utility. The ability to teleport every round and get out of grapples, move out of melee with the big...

ChatGPT lies then gaslights reporter with fake transcript

The shine has worn off. People thought AI was ready to just be given the keys and generate magic. It is an incredible tool and it continues to advance....but at the end of the day its more like a human than a computer. It makes mistakes, it lies, it has to be managed. People have gotten so used...

ChatGPT lies then gaslights reporter with fake transcript

AI tasks tend to excel in areas where the workproduct takes a lot of effort (or requires a certain level of creativity) but can be validated quickly. For example, I can look at an AI art piece and tell very quickly that its good, decent, or garbage. But the time to create that piece could be...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

I disagree, because its not just a narrative difference but a mechanical one. I don't need a monster book to justify how it gets the stats that it gets, its job is to provide me creatures with stats that suit a certain challenge. I don't care why this gladiator guy has an X AC, and a Y...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

+2.5 to attacks translates to .05*2.5 = .125 more hits per round per attack made. (assuming to hit is not already so high that the bonus does't matter, but its rare in bounded accuracy to get that high). .125 x 2 attacks per fighter type x 2 frontline fighters that I mentioned = .5 more hits...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

After reading through all of this thread, here is where I am at. I don't know exactly what new class should be introduced, but I do agree with the arguments that is should be a spell-less class. I don't if it has some magicaly X or auras or something....but not spells. We have so many...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

No bless is amazing because it effects 3 characters. I bless my two frontliners with 2 attacks. So to your point, every 2 rounds of combat I get an extra hit (or more if they are fighters). Now throw in that area spell that hits a couple of them, again more chance to save (and its one of the...
