What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

Almost certainly yes! You trend setter! I’m trying to cast my mind back but I’m pretty sure that d20 re-rolls were extremely rare in 3e and before. Not sure if they came in during 4e.

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

As I mentioned before I’m pretty convinced the route forward for fun 5e Pirate Ship operation is to abstract-the-shiz out of it. Kinda further to what @bedir than just said. We don’t track barrels of ale if the PCs but a tavern so why do it for an enterprise like this. I’m sure a subset of the...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

Very late to this party but if it hasn’t been mentioned so far… the re-roll.

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

No problem. I mean I get it. I personally would have loved a detailed Master and Commander style campaign where each ship is a mobile settlement. The problem is every other PC would have to want this too, which is highly unlikely with most groups. I have come to terms with the fact that Skull...

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

It’s possible for a fantasy game to borrow from multiple sources and carry the flavour of a genre without being constrained by historical accuracy. Otherwise every fantasy city in RPG would starve from the lack of food and water and be bankrupted/collapse under the prohibitive cost and...

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

The best pirate setting I have seen is Razor Coast by Nicholas Logue - a veteran of Dungeon Magazine and many of the best Paizo adventure paths. It’s written for Pathfinder but easily adaptable for 5e.

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

I do think it’s funny that folks seem to think a letter of marque transforms an act from evil to good. Privateering was piracy by another name. Legitimizing it in the name of a national flag doesn’t change the nature of the act. Honesty though I wouldn’t get too hung up on it if your party...

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

Pirate campaigns can be awesome fun. I would highly recommend these three. - Ghosts of Saltmarsh: You know this one, but a really solid campaign. Lots of fun. - Skull and Shackles : Great adventures with lots of different themes. Stealing a pirate ship, and shipwreck on an island, capture of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rank 5e skills from most useful (1) to least useful (18)

Of the three social skills I feel intimidation is so much lower than the others. It forces a hostile position there and then. Not only that, it reduced the potential targets to someone who you would be willing to intimidate. Deception potentially does the same thing. Reducing the available...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rank 5e skills from most useful (1) to least useful (18)

I wonder if the fact that everyone recognises Perception is number 1, means we should probably call for Survival and Investigation more than we do. 🤔

    D&D 5E (2024) Rank 5e skills from most useful (1) to least useful (18)

I’m surprised people haven’t ranked Survival higher. The tracking element alone would make it more useful I would have thought.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rank 5e skills from most useful (1) to least useful (18)

10 years on with a new edition update how would you rank the 5e skills 1-18 from most useful to least useful in a typical campaign. Let’s assume it’s running levels 1-10. Don’t worry about individual classes it’s less about what your character has and more what the party has access to. I’ve left...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Even if you believed sprawling dungeon crawls were half the game (which I very much don’t) it is still possible to combine the smaller dungeon model into larger dungeons. Most of the best dungeons do this anyway. You didn’t answer the question. How is the DM using tougher monsters, tactics or...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Removing the problem is a defacto way of dealing with it. Secondly why is matching the difficulty to the players capabilities offloading it? Surely that is one of the DMs prime responsibilities?

D&D General Has 5e become noise?

Honesty I filter out all players option class/subsclass/feat stuff and only look at bestiaries and campaigns. That actually makes it manageable. There are some amazing 3pp campaigns out there that are definitely worth considering. I don’t need players option stuff there is plenty in official...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The other wider solution to this is a move away from static dungeon crawling that leaves timing entirely at the players whim and a move towards, mysteries, heists, city crawls, event based adventure etc. What I would call modern adventuring. Secondly - design boss encounters to be a challenge...

Which are you, The plan everything out GM, or the Ad lib?

This is exactly my DM style. I prep extensively. Factions, Organisations, Locations, NPCs, monsters and events. What the PCs then do happens in that context. Decision making becomes easier because my prep work provides the inspiration for rational and logical outcomes.

I think it is time for a break.

You’re a TTRPG expert on multiple levels. Well over the 10,000 hours. It would be a real shame for you to sever the tie completely. Have you considered switching to just playing instead of DMing. Even if it’s with online groups? I found that extremely refreshing.
