There is a lot of wandering monster checks that are just for combat. There is no reason to not spice it up some with the close roll but not not combat and have rodents get into your food or chew a hole in your pack. It might also be a bit of the game that is overlooked with the newer editions...

I tend to just play D&D, so I am already playing 60+ sessions campaigns with that system. It works and we are still having fun.
