Could a healing spell just heal a set percent of your total instead of having a chart for each class? A basic cure light wounds heals 1/4 your total. Maybe add your level to make things more balanced as you gain levels. So a mage with 4hp only gains 1hp (or 1+1 if gaining your level as well)...

Perhaps long-lived races like elves only can have children a few times. Where humans can become pregnant each month, an elf might only be able to once a year or every 5/10/50 years.

I do this a lot in 5e. Mostly for daggers, but also to hand axes and hammers. I even added it to a battle axe for flavor. It seems mostly a work around for arrows and such.
