One of my best D&D memories is reading the BECMI "Gazetteer" series, one-at-a-time, as they were published. The mystery, build up, and eventual reveal of the "Land of the Red Sun" or the Hollow World kept me excited for at least a year . . . Hard to replicate that experience nowadays. :(...

Kinda. Adventurer's League modules don't have the same reach as something put out in stores.

Are you sure it didn't "catch on"? Do you have numbers? Demiplane seems a robust platform to me, with a bunch of important partnerships, including Paizo. Their 5E Nexus seems to have stalled, but the other game systems they offer seem to be doing well.

I haven't used either yet with gaming books, so I don't know. I've tried epub novels, but being used to the simplicity of the Amazon Kindle walled garden, I didn't like my brief foray into epub.

This is me with Return to Dark Tower. My play group loves this as a break from our D&D sessions, but . . . I had to buy the game, and I am the "game expert". They just show up to play. Well, yeah . . . the situation is different in Europe, Japan, and other places outside the US and the British Commonwealth. ENWorld is run from the UK, the hobby at large originated in and is still centered around the US . . . so that's the bias of most of us here. But it's a good reminder...

That was not clear in your initial post. At all. Yes, the problem isn't that there aren't plenty of not-D&D games, but that more casual fans aren't learning about them. So, how can the industry improve on that beyond "better marketing"?

I think it's possible . . . but very difficult to pull off. A lot of the other things we're discussing in this thread, if incorporated into a new RPG . . . could help that RPG truly rival D&D in popularity.

That ship sailed long ago. Inflation, rising costs of plastics and shipping, and now tariffs . . . Relatively inexpensive UNPAINTED minis are starting to be a thing . . . there are several boxed sets on Amazon (and probably other retailers) that are of reasonable quality and price.
