Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I don't think it is ever spelled out specifically, but even back under 1st edition AD&D/Basic D&D every group understood that you needed that balance. Other games that I have played, Call of Cthulhu for example, follow similarly. In the CoC campaign I am currently playing in I'm the...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

This largely describes my DMing/Playing style over the last 40 years. D&D (and role-playing in general) is about becoming part of the world or setting you are playing. Immersion and perhaps less agency. We're here to tell the story that is presented to us. Not rail-roady but linear. Whether the...

What are your TTRPG Goals for 2025?

Starting in 2025 these are my goals going forward into the future... 1. Continue and finish my current D&D 2024 campaign. Learn the system so I can DM better and improve going forward. 2. I'm in my early 50's now so I want to get more gaming in. I already do a fair bit of Warhammer 40K but I...

When Combat Isn't Always *About* Combat

But in answer to your question, I've run fights on swinging ropes/logs, on rope bridges over cliffs and the like where balance was just as important as martial skill. One Pathfinder game a few years back, had the party fighting the final villain on the back of his colossal dragon mount. That was...

When Combat Isn't Always *About* Combat

Back in 2nd edition AD&D there was a Ravenloft scenario that I ran (I don't remember the name) where the characters had to go back into time to recover some magical Faberge egg type thing to stop something happening (again I forget what). They snuck into ancient Castle Ravenloft and recovered...

    How often do you play?

Weekly. My group alternates Sundays. One Sunday I run my D&D campaign, and the other Sunday alternates being campaigns and systems. My FLGS also hosts one shot nights of D&D every other week, where I am currently converting the 1st edition PFS scenarios over to D&D 2024. If I wasn't getting...

D&D General What would your "fourth core rulebook" be?

For me, it would be a D&D 2024 version of this. Ultimate Equipment was probably the most used book during our long years of Pathfinder 1st. It had a large variety of mundane equipment (ignoring for the purposes of this that it had almost every magic item as well) and the really reduced equipment...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I'm guessing I've missed it and running on older edition knowledge, but are rings not limited to two per character any more?

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling Morale Checks

Wisdom save. Sorry, I played a lot of Pathfinder before coming back to D&D.

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling Morale Checks

I remember 2nd edition had a morale score for monsters but I don't think I've ever seen that since. In my case I either decide for myself or if needs be make it a Will save to see if they run.

D&D General Anyone else notice this?

The modern versions of the game have to cover opportunities for all potential game styles and that is why it might feel out of touch. All the way back to 1st edition my games have always been more storytelling but without the excessive role-play. Locally we have a group that meets at my FLGS and...

D&D 5E (2024) What Monster Should Have Made the Cut?

Gem Dragons and Eye of the Deep (Aquatic Beholder). The main classics otherwise appear to be there. Hopefully we'll get more books later to fill in other lost classic monsters. Personally I'm not all the fussed by the "class" types... cultist, acolyte cleric...etc. Ditch those and put more...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

Agreed. Not all their adventure paths were up to standard. A couple were truly bad for things like that. There was one I played (something of fire?) that locked you in a demiplane for 3 or 4 levels with no way to buy or sell anything and it made everyone just gnash their teeth. Badly written was...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

Paizo's adventure paths are not railroads but they are linear. Linear adventures/campaigns aren't bad as they still allow players to decide how they handle a situation and progress the story their table is telling.
