D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

It's cool. I can see there being room for more backgrounds in D&D. Right now, I am just wondering how many more and how many of them are actually used or will be used by the players.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

I think the number of backgrounds in 5e2014 and 5e2024 are just enough for the player to pick and choose what they want for their character.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Every species in a D&D setting probably is as culturally diverse as humans are. However, how do you expect WoTC to portray those thousands of Wood Elf cultures? There are an untold number of human cultures in RL, but there is not a single book that covers all of them.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Especially when 5e is trying to keep it short and simple. As everyone pretty much knows, RL is anything but simple. That would be my guess too. Which is why Level Up split species into heritage and culture in the first place. Level Up wanted to get away from the Planet of Hats trope.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

I don't have this particular 2024 book, so I can't offer up my two copper pieces just yet on what I think of it. As for the Dragon Cult, I would probably use Level Up's Dragon Cult culture instead of what's being offered in Heroes of Faerun. ;) FR's Cult of the Dragon deals with Chromatic...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

And this is one of the reasons why the DM will ask a player for a skill check. ;) Individually, people aren't very knowledgeable about everything that makes up the culture they live in. We know bits and pieces on any given topic and will defer to someone more knowledgeable than ourselves. More...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

According to Wikipedia, Culture is a concept that encompasses the social behavior, institutions, and norms found in human societies, as well as the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities, attitudes, and habits of individuals in these groups. So, your definition of culture is...

Which background in 5e grants the character a bonus language?

That setting probably would be the Forgotten Realms. It's been around since 1e and has appeared in nearly every edition of D&D. The other settings haven't received the same amount of support as FR has.

Are you suggesting that WoTC should do what Paizo did in PF1 by coming up with its' own take of the Elves of Golarion splatbook? That would be a rather neat way to cover elven culture in each of D&D settings.

3PP Release The Night of the Knife: A Campaign Quartet Adventure

Ah. :) When I first got my hands on the Adventurer's Guide and saw Leather Brigandine instead of Studded Leather, I briefly wondered about the name change for several of the armors. Now you got me a wondering again. :p Was Leather Brigandine the original name for that kind of light armor and...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

You can push the idea of a multiverse with just a single world. It's been done before in various TV series, comic books, films, etc. Since the Forgotten Realms is pretty much the default setting nowadays, we're seeing multiple Torils being debuted every time an RPG group plays 5e D&D. ;)

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

This is happily covered in Level Up. If it's something you are born with, it's a part of your heritage. If it's something you have to learn in order to use it effectively, then it's going to be in either your background and/or your culture.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Backgrounds don't really say anything about culture specifically. They do, however, lend themselves to your character's origin as they represent who the character was before they left to become an adventurer. They also can be found in every culture in a given setting. And unless it's otherwise...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Culture should mean something more in D&D, not less. Anything your characters learns while growing up in a particular culture, like the ones presented in A5e, shapes your character's origin within a given setting by giving them traits with mechanical benefits (weapon and armor proficiencies...

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

I am not sure 5e could come anywhere near this format because of its' complexity. That said, I like this piece of abstract artwork. ;)

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Another thing that Level Up has done for race is splitting race up into Heritage (who your parents are) and Culture (the society you grew up in). Heritage covers any trait that your character was born with such as Age, Size, Speed, Senses and a signature trait such as a Dragonborn's breath...

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

DS broke whatever mold WoTC uses to create a setting in D&D by making so many changes to its' classes, races and history. The biggest change of all being that DS is heavy in psionics.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

They could always convert 3e's Expanded Psionics Handbook for 5e and include one or more chapters for DS in it.

    D&D 5E (2024) Bringing Back A Prestige Class?

I think 3e's Unearthed Arcana had both the Ranger and the Paladin as 15 level Prestige classes.
