    D&D 5E (2014) Best D&D 5e alternate ruleset?

The chances A5e did take were enough to get me interested in backing and collecting it. :)

Other D&D Variant What is your favorite version of D&D offshoot/D20 fantasy today? Tell us why it is the best!

Level Up: A5e. Where to even start? 🤔 *It's slightly crunchier than 5e and has addressed some of the issues found in 5e (such as the Martial/Spellcaster gap). *Race/Species was split up into Heritage (who your parents are) and Culture (the society you grew up in). All of the species traits that...

What is your favourite part of TTRPGing?

Reading some of the player-facing material (species, classes, etc.) in order to come up with a character concept for your character during session zero and then trying to role-play as that character during the actual adventure itself. Playing with complete strangers at the TTRPG or the VTTRPG...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Whereas Level Up's crunch deals with the three pillars of gameplay (combat, exploration, and social interaction) and a more extensive origin (heritage, culture, background and destiny) for anyone making a PC.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

The official Google definition for Crunch in an RPG: In the context of role-playing games (RPGs), "crunch" refers to the mechanics and rules that govern gameplay. It contrasts with "fluff," which relates to the narrative and setting of the game. Crunch is often characterized by the complexity...

D&D General Wild Shape: Inefficient or Useless?

Laser Llama and PF1 (Paizo and Legendary Games) both have the Shifter class, a more martial wildshaping class. Laser Llama's take on the Shifter class just allows the character to assume an avian, a brute, a carnivore or a reptile with their Bloodline feature...

D&D General Wild Shape: Inefficient or Useless?

There ought to be Druid subclasses for 5e that focus on those two monster types. PF1 had the Treesinger Druid (which covered the Plant types) and Kobold Press had the Elemental Exarch Druid for PF1.

D&D General Wild Shape: Inefficient or Useless?

In older editions of D&D and Pathfinder you could wildshape into Elementals and Plant Creatures. While you could only get these forms at higher tiers of game play, they were geared more toward combat.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Compared to Level Up: A5e, 2024 5e received a tiny dollop of complexity and crunch in what it was offering to the Players. It made some improvements to 2014 5e while making some questionable changes in other areas of the RPG.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

It's certainly possible that the pendulum is making its' way to some degree of complexity and crunch. However, it's hard to say if the releases of those two RPGs are the start of a trend that will lead to RPGs being like they were before 5e. It could be some RPG companies are testing the waters...

With interest. ;) I find A5e to be a good investment.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

You mean the Tracking rules in the DMG? They're pretty simple and easy to use since they mostly require the player to make a Wisdom (Survival) check.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

What would be the alternative? curious

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

A successful History check. (y) Wouldn't this have made the Ranger into arcane half-casters rather divine half-casters? You said this earlier: Why turn toward a wizard when they just as easily could have turned to a Fey, an Elemental, or another and much older Ranger?

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

So far, I have had my Ranger character use the Survival skill for all of his tracking without any problem. It made for some interesting moments for my Ranger character. True, most quests probably won't have fresh tracks for the Ranger to follow. But a Ranger can still track an old set of tracks...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Thankfully the Wildborn Ranger in A5e gets their spells from the Druid spell list. As for Tracking, we've got the Survival skill for the purposes of tracking something without the aid of magic.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Or all of the above. ;) However, since the 2024 Guide background seems to be the go-to Ranger background, it would appear to be the first option. Druids taught Rangers how to use Nature Magic (another name for 4e's Primal Magic?). That said, why give the Ranger class their own spell list when...

D&D 5E (2024) Class and Subclass Design: What Works

As @DEFCON 1 pointed out in their post, what would be gained if you made each of the Fighter and Ranger subclasses into their own classes. Aside from the features that were originally subclass features, you would have to add in new base class features for each one to make them visually distinct...

D&D 5E (2024) Class and Subclass Design: What Works

This problem was addressed in Level Up when each of the classes was given features to cover each of the pillars in the game. They also became a little more customizable than their counterparts in 5e by having features that gave the player more than one option to choose from. Agreed. The Level...
