    D&D 5E (2014) I played a game of Classic D&D.

I've found that my enjoyment in playing is not the edition of the game. It's hanging out with friends and having a good time.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you measure, and enforce, alignment?

I use alignment in the games I run as a roleplaying guideline. It does not control/dictate how you must act. If you act outside of your alignment, it may change it, but that has little impact in the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

I miss it immensely when someone plays a barbarian halfling/gnome with an 18 strength. The level of ridiculousness is epic.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll: Is it rude for a sidelined player to leave the session?

Depends on if there is a chance they get to play and who's fault it is they are separated.

D&D 5E (2014) What does balance mean to you?

Balance to me means that each player can contribute to the game and feel good about their contribution. This of course varies from player to player and how they like to play the game. One player should not get all the lime light by say, dominating combat. As DM, it's my job to appropriately...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Makes a Good Urban Adventure?

In Session 0, explain that the characters are from the city, and care about the city. Center the quests and adventure around the city, and bettering it. Have several important NPCs in the city, and one that notably likes the party, and can help them out. If you set up that the characters are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing and Negative HP

That's cool if you run it differently than the rules. I would suggest adding that it is a house rule next time, so it's not confusing. With that omission, it came across as required RAW.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are you a cat person?

Nope. I really like the old core races, and find all the others rather unappealing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing and Negative HP

That's not accurate. Nothing in the rules say you must declare all actions and then blindly follow through with them. Anyone can change their mind after they see the result of any attack (or any action they do). Even Ready an Action allows you to not take your action after the trigger. You...

    Resting in armour

I'd probably just do one level of regular exhaustion for sleeping in bulky/heavy armor, and not have it go any higher.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want psionics in your D&D?

If done correctly, Psionics could be really cool. I've always seen them as game breaking before, so they never had a place in our games.

    D&D 5E (2014) DM Toolbox

Laptop, paper notepad, pencil, dice, Pathfinder's Combat Pad, DM Screen (customized with sticky notes), Ipad, Pathfinder Pawns (for smaller minis) and figures for larger creatures, sh*t sheet, RPG roller (dice app), and an assortment of dungeon tiles (with a whiteboard battlemap for backup). I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Survey D&D General questions

What is your age? 46 At what age did you start playing D&D? 7 Are you a boy or a girl? Male What did you find difficult about the game at first? Learning how to run a game. What is the most important you think should be in a tutorial animation? Have fun. What kind of ambiance would you like...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock in party with Quasit breaking story

Limit the access where he can safely reach; doors/windows it can't get through, guard dogs, traps Hide stuff from it: secret doors, illusionary walls, hidden assassins. Or obscure it's vision with fog, smoke, or magical darkness.

D&D 5E (2014) Newbie question re: surprise, initiative and ready action

I think you handled it perfectly. A character can 'be ready', but not 'ready an action' before combat starts. If you make combat start as soon as they notice the light, you could take away the opportunity to surprise since it only happens in the first round. For example, if the enemy was...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you favour short or long campaigns?

I really like a game that has a good story arc, especially a good ending. Length isn't so important. It is nice to play higher level characters though. Way too often our campaigns burn out after 7th or 8th level (when starting at 1st). The DM gets tired of running the game and we as players...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you miss about 5E if you were playing AD&D?

Feats, skills, Advantage/disadvantage, Inspiration, Opportunity attacks, Higher AC being better, character backgrounds, and spell slots. I know AD&D has character backgrounds and spell slots, but 5e does it better.

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-stealth surprise

Yes, guards do the same routine every day. They may look at the barbarian and go, "whoa, that guy is strong." but they would never expect anyone to openly attack a guard when they are in the castle occupied by an army. That would be suicidal. It's not that guards would never expect an attack...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-stealth surprise

Wow, guards sure do have a large support group in this thread. :) Not all guards are hyper-vigilant and paranoid. Maybe a beloved King's personal guard are...but every day Joes on guard duty? Nah. It's just a job.

D&D 5E (2014) Smoke inhalation - when PCs do silly things in enclosed spaces

Unless it's important to the story that one of them fail, I would simply overlook it and say they they have a coughing fit, their eyes water, and that they regret their bad idea. I might have the smoke do some minor damage to them to reflect the ordeal. The smoke will dissipate the further it...
