D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Hey,, I'm agreeing with you. I think the fact D&D species are all funny hats is acceptable because I really think that playing a truly alien mind isn't possible, and if it was I don't know if it would be fun. So when people say that a dwarf should not have the same mindset as a human, I find...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

I pointed out later on the example of warforged how we can take an absolutely alien life form and still impress upon it certain notions of humanity because we're still humans trying to figure out what a 300 lb magical golem would do in a dungeon filled with traps and monsters. If that's...

I assume it's because they have enough bonuses in resisting all those biological needs and environmental hazards as is. At a certain point, you gotta find some weakness for them!

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

I think, on a purely meta design level, the most interesting species in D&D is warforged. They are not biological. They have no biological sex, no need for intercourse, no ability to procreate without outside assistance. They do not eat, breathe, or sleep. They have no defined culture except for...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Well yes, biology shouldn't have any affect on what kind of person you are. Your intelligence, aptitudes, interests, gender role, or culture is not a factor of biology. The same is, in theory, true of other sapient beings. So? There is nothing in the lore of that says that they have any...

D&D 5E (2024) Orc lore in the new Forgotten Realms books?

It's sorta both. Gruumsh was late to the party, so the other gods picked first . When he got there, he said that since there is no one place for the orcs, they will wander whenever they please. They made it where Gruumsh isn't cheated out of malice, nor does he claim his people will be a blight...

Forgotten Realms: Astarion's Book of Hungers - First Impressions

They are on par with the ones in Heroes of Faerun. Make of that what you will. They are flavorful, but many are limited use to 1/rest or prof per day. Most could stand a few more uses per session. I could see using some, but if you are an optimizer, you'll probably pass.

D&D 5E (2024) Orc lore in the new Forgotten Realms books?

The orcs are reframed as nomads, wandering without a homeland after the bad deal made to Gruumsh. Many are pressed into service by evil rulers or resort to banditry to survive, but others trade, herd, or act as mercenaries.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Well, for starters it creates the biological essentialism argument that a dwarf born an orphan and never having contact with other dwarves would still instinctively speak dwarves, have an affinity for axes and hammers, feel an connection to dwarven gods he's never met, and probably will speak...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Close. We're still using "dwarf" as a culture though. There is no "dwarf" culture. There is Mythral Hall or the Great Rift of other lands with high dwarf populations that have cultures that people might regard as "dwarven" but other species who grew up in Mythral Hall would have those same...

Maybe we can go further and make all dwarf PCs the same class. Like a dwarf class you have to take. Same with an elf and halfling class. That works for you?

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

What would work is to clearly define it as a macro to micro level. I am a dwarf (species). I grew up in Waterdeep (culture). I am a blacksmith (background). The first defines my biological abilities (size, speed, senses), the second defines the world I grew up in (religion, language...

Forgotten Realms: Astarion's Book of Hungers - First Impressions

I want some of those horror UA subs first. I'm torn between a shadow sorcerer, necromancer wizard or undead warlock.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

A place can be savage. A people should not. I don't get the hulabaloo. We have a Savage Attacker feat in the PHB. People can use context to determine the difference between "the Savage North" and "orcs are savages."

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Essentially. I'm suggesting that some setting (most likely Forgotten Realms) is the explicit setting of D&D and the supplements and adventures all use Faerun as the default lore. So you can have a book like Tome of Foes that talks about elf culture using Faerun as the touchstone rather than try...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Better idea, fix save-based scaling DCs to be EITHER Prof OR Ability score so that they don't require massive save scaling to stay relevant.

1 species, 16 feats, 3 backgrounds. Plus 5 monsters. Alacarte*, that's 25 x $2.00 = $50. $40 if you skip the monsters (who are rather cool IMHO). * Yes that is a dhampir joke

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

No, I'm talking about how the D&D core books are left "setting neutral" because they are trying to sell you seven different settings and they are all covered an inch deep. The PHB can't explain elven culture on Faerun because it's trying to hard to create an elf that works in Faerun, Oerth...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

FOR EXAMPLE. I'm saying if you want to take a full audit of how often the game calls for a particular saving throw, you better open the Monster Manual alongside the spell chapter.
