What are some alternate ways to think about archetypes?

I hadn’t thought about that, however it is a pretty good description of the differences between the Spidies in ‘Across the Spiderverse’. It’s kind of a meta tag: the context you do things in.

What are some alternate ways to think about archetypes?

The three axis which come to mind for me are: What you do - classic D&D is an example How you do it - Fate accelerated is an example of this Why you do it - Smallville mechanises relationships and ‘virtues’ which are a good example of this. These can exist in combination, for example D&D 4e...

What do you, personally, need a system to do for you?

From my perspective, an RPG system provides the game bit of the role-playing game. As with all games, the system should be understandable and fun to use. The rules should also support the narrative effectively. So, typically that would involve a core mechanic which is used in a pretty...

What does it take for an RPG to die?

(Thread too long - didn’t read!) I think RPGs are like Pratchett’s gods - as long as one person somewhere is reading a game and planning running it, or even a better a group is running it, that RPG is still alive.

In-person Game cancelled. What do you play?

Board games are our second choice for game nights. We might play one because someone can’t make it, or life and work has meant the GM couldn’t prep in time for the current session, or we are having a short rest between campaigns. We don’t sweat it, roleplaying is fun, not work, so there is no...

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

I still play D&D from time to time, even though it isn’t my personally favourite there are others in my group who really enjoy it, and I’m ok with that. Even with that, I rarely frequent the D&D forums here. This site has a good mix of industry news, and some great general discussion threads...

    Spoilers THUNDERBOLTS* (spoilers I guess?)

Apparently her necklace charm also looks very similar to Songbird’s character symbol, too

Do Shorter Lists Make Players/GMs More Creative?

I think it’s complicated, to give a non-answer. If I consider GURPS with it’s huge lists of advantages, for example, I still find that a system that fosters creativity whereas looking at something like feats in 3.x derived games I find them to be constricting. So I don’t think it is how long...

    High-quality systemless books [+]

The Guide to Glorantha Vol 1 & 2 are system-less books about that world. I often get setting bibles for good IPs where I would want to run games in those worlds and either they don’t have an official RPG adaption or I where I think one of my go-to systems is already a good fit. I have setting...

    Old Lady Gamer

I have older friends who are members of the University of the Third Age and they already have an organised board game club at their local ‘chapter’. So I am sure you are right!

    What Are Your Non-Gaming Hobbies/Interests?

I don’t drive very fast these days. If you think US laws on speed are harsh, UK laws are much, much more punishing. Which is a good thing in aggregate but means you always need to think before have some fun at speed. I find the enjoyment is pinning together a set of curves in a road, which can...

    What Are Your Non-Gaming Hobbies/Interests?

More an interests than a hobby, I suppose, but I love the theatre. We try to go and see a couple of new plays or musicals each year. Live music too, nothing beats live performance. My other interest / vice is fast cars. Every car I have ever bought has been a performance car of some stripe or...

    Old Lady Gamer

On a somewhat serious note, social stimulation and mental stimulation are two of the best things for helping stave off Alzheimers (I have a family member recently diagnosed, so this has been something we have had to learn about quickly).

Mass Layoffs At Polygon, Major Gaming News Outlet

I’m just a user like most everyone else on this site, however it is probably my most-visited site on the internet and definitely my major source of role-playing news, which I personally find very valuable. In a world where good online spaces (of any kind) are becoming rarer, if you value...

    Virtual drop tables?

It’s a handy app. I never considered that the option for a custom background meant you could use it for drop tables.

    Virtual drop tables?

This app lets you add custom backdrops if you upgrade to the Pro level (less than $5 by the look of it). Dice 3D You could create a backdrop with the tables and then roll dice against it. It is a physics engine so it will model where the dice go and any collisions between them.

What Video Game RPG System Do You Want to See Adapted to Tabletop

If you want detailed rules for guns then there are a couple of short GURPS supplements that focus on that (Tactical Shooting, and Extreme Conditions). I find the trick with ultra-detailed combat is that is needs to be the exception rather than the rule. When I tried running Dungeon Fantasy for...

What Video Game RPG System Do You Want to See Adapted to Tabletop

For sure. The missed opportunity in my mind is that WFRP 3e did something different and interesting mechanically but it was rejected by the audience and so no one seems to have had the courage to try it again. Complexity in games is cool where it is managed well and used for interesting things...
