WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

Very much so, to the extent I'm no longer able to enjoy GMing 2014 D&D, never mind having any desire to get the latest version. I was willing to give them another chance after the OGL scandal but it just kept getting worse. Currently running Shadowdark, previously Dragonbane and Cyberpunk Red.

Quick Tip: Using Shadowdark RPG for Sword & Sorcery gaming

It is kinda marginal. I recall a demigod semi-protagonist incinerating swathes of foes in a 1980s S&S novel, The Fortress of Eternity.

Quick Tip: Using Shadowdark RPG for Sword & Sorcery gaming

Wizards incinerating enemies does happen in S&S, but for S&S Fireball should probably be limited to a Near-size blast emanating from the Wizard, not Far range.

Quick Tip: Using Shadowdark RPG for Sword & Sorcery gaming

My campaign page for Shadowdark Midlands SnS setting - The Midlands of Argosa (Shadowdark) - I'm doing humans plus half-Skorn only, though the setting does technically have elves and dwarves.

Quick Tip: Using Shadowdark RPG for Sword & Sorcery gaming

Not sure why half the people in this thread have apparently been banned 🧐 I think Shadowdark is a good fit for 1980s style SnS such as Thieves World, which often had magic using protagonists. Also fits well with Elric and other Moorcockian settings. For a more purist Conanesque game without PC...

Shadowdark: How Essential is the Dungeon?

My current game is dungeon focused, but SD has strong support for wilderness and especially urban settings. I will be using it for Midlands which is a sword and sorcery sandbox with lots of short varied adventures across all environments.

Quick Tip: Using Shadowdark RPG for Sword & Sorcery gaming

Good ideas thanks Thulsa! I was just looking at the Midlands SnS sandbox yesterday and thinking how well it would suit Shadowdark with these kinds of tweaks. I loved my Dragonbane Xoth campaign, one of my players is still raving over it 😄 - I'll probably stick with Dragonbane when I run Xoth...

    Games that do 'ALIEN' well

I ran a great Alien mini-campaign using Call of Cthulu. I would certainly use CoC/BRP before any Narrativist type system. The fragile PCs with ablating hit points (& SAN) worked great.

Plenty Of Time To Die: A Shadowdark Review

(Haven't played yet so this is just from reading the game) Going by the rules I'd think a good gp reward/3 XP reward looks right, but if it was a major quest I might raise it to 5 XP given they're 5th level, and that is 10% of the XP needed to level up. Standard award at level 5 would be 50 gp...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

I find WoTC abhorrent. They're almost laughably villainous. They sent copyright strikes to Youtubers they had sent PHB review copies to! But I was already digusted with them before that, I think the Pinkertons episode was the last straw. The direction of the game in terms of rules and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Free 60+ page Guide to Sword & Sorcery for 5E D&D

From my experience running 5e Primeval Thule, this is exactly right. Teens-level 5e in S&S is kinda ok but leans strongly towards the feel of the Marvel Savage Sword of Conan comics, with Conan as a superhero stomping on gods and Great Old Ones. The most fun we had was definiitely with level...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Yeah I had every intention of playing 4e but bounced off it in 2008 & only really got into it late 2010. Conversely I said I had no interest in 5e but it hooked me pretty fast! But I feel like 5e has been on a downward trend for years with lots of bad stuff being released, so 'more of the same'...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

No, I'll be contininuing several existing 5e campaigns but I took 2023 as a wake up call to try new stuff; I'm loving Dragonbane & Cyberpunk Red. My guess would be that it'd be around 2028-30 before I'd be looking at a revised D&D edition & really I'd prefer to see new management first, just as...

D&D 5E (2014) Running a campaign for experienced players using the 5th ed. Basic Rules

Game is still running & going great. PCs have reached 3rd level now. Link https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/16571999/dandd-5e-basic I'm allowing multiclassing, one PC multiclassed to Ftr 2/Clr 1 which fits her very well. Others are Ftr 3 Wiz 3 & Rog 3. The Mystara setting is of course...

D&D General Joe Manganiello: Compares Early 5E to BG 3 . How Important is Lore?

Apparently this is a completely unfounded libel cooked up on Something Awful.

D&D General Joe Manganiello: Compares Early 5E to BG 3 . How Important is Lore?

Manganiello said that the controversy led to Mearls getting pushed out of the 'drivers' seat' for Dungeons & Dragons. "And then the Twitter mob rises up with the pitchforks and the torches and it was right in that kind of weird spot when all of that was at its height and everyone was listening...

D&D General Joe Manganiello: Compares Early 5E to BG 3 . How Important is Lore?

Wow. Manganiello has exactly my own view on 2014-18 D&D, Mike Mearls, and current post 2018 D&D. He's more diplomatic than me though. :D

What TTRPGs have the best tactical combat rules?

I like the tactics in Dragonbane. We had a knight vs knight duel last session and every combat round involved tactical choices such as what kind of attack to make (slashing, piercing, piercing precision strike), and whether to spend precious WP on use of Heroic Abilities such as Veteran (keep...
