Very much so, to the extent I'm no longer able to enjoy GMing 2014 D&D, never mind having any desire to get the latest version. I was willing to give them another chance after the OGL scandal but it just kept getting worse. Currently running Shadowdark, previously Dragonbane and Cyberpunk Red.

It is kinda marginal. I recall a demigod semi-protagonist incinerating swathes of foes in a 1980s S&S novel, The Fortress of Eternity.

Wizards incinerating enemies does happen in S&S, but for S&S Fireball should probably be limited to a Near-size blast emanating from the Wizard, not Far range.

My campaign page for Shadowdark Midlands SnS setting - The Midlands of Argosa (Shadowdark) - I'm doing humans plus half-Skorn only, though the setting does technically have elves and dwarves.

Not sure why half the people in this thread have apparently been banned 🧐 I think Shadowdark is a good fit for 1980s style SnS such as Thieves World, which often had magic using protagonists. Also fits well with Elric and other Moorcockian settings. For a more purist Conanesque game without PC...

My current game is dungeon focused, but SD has strong support for wilderness and especially urban settings. I will be using it for Midlands which is a sword and sorcery sandbox with lots of short varied adventures across all environments.

Good ideas thanks Thulsa! I was just looking at the Midlands SnS sandbox yesterday and thinking how well it would suit Shadowdark with these kinds of tweaks. I loved my Dragonbane Xoth campaign, one of my players is still raving over it 😄 - I'll probably stick with Dragonbane when I run Xoth...

I ran a great Alien mini-campaign using Call of Cthulu. I would certainly use CoC/BRP before any Narrativist type system. The fragile PCs with ablating hit points (& SAN) worked great.

(Haven't played yet so this is just from reading the game) Going by the rules I'd think a good gp reward/3 XP reward looks right, but if it was a major quest I might raise it to 5 XP given they're 5th level, and that is 10% of the XP needed to level up. Standard award at level 5 would be 50 gp...
