D&D General Updating a Campaign World

I tend to have a ton of NPCs I love in my games, so I rarely want a big timeskip & lose them all. I think about 8 years is the most I've done.

What are the greatest published adventures you've run?

The greatest memories tend to be homebrew stuff. For published adventures, I ran Red Hand of Doom a few years ago in 5e, and have run about half of Odyssey of the Dragonlords. Both are extremely good I think. Gary Gygax's Necropolis was probably the most hated (both by me & my players) adventure...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

I'd say shield is most powerful when your AC is already high and when you have a lot of spell slots, ie at high level. AIR I disagreed with your view that AC matters less at high level.

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

Similarly, my son's Eldritch Knight never ever takes Opportunity Attacks, never uses his Reaction, precisely so that he always has Shield available. Paladin really seems one of the weaker classes to multiclass to get Shield, given how valuable their spell slots are. Eldritch Knight Bladesinger...

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

IME even in lower power settings it's more like Level 1-4 - personal stakes, rescue the merchant from the ogres. Eg the PCs rescued Sumata Mercellin from The Great Ulfe in WoTC's Forge of Fury. Level 5-10 - the fate of a village may rest on your actions. Eg the PCs saved Malthlyn village in...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

Re Paladins & Shield, my house rule is only one spellcaster class per multiclass PC. I did it because of Sorcadin shenanigans, but reading about this makes me doubly glad! :)

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

A +14 attack vs AC 20 is very different from a +14 attack with Disadvantage vs AC 30. IME attacks vs AC remain very common at all levels in 5e, with saving throws getting somewhat more common but never dominant. Generally the PCs are putting out more saving throw attacks than they are receiving...

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

Yes. Level 1 & 2 are too squishy. 3 & 4 are good, albeit tough. Most of my 5e groups have been in the 5-10 range for the past couple years (partly due to new PCs coming in at half the maximum PC level) and it definitely feels like a sweet spot. 11-16 remains perfectly playable though, aside...

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

I'm loving Dragonbane, which is a BRP/Runequest derived system, ie no levels.

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

This is certainly not my experience. In your higher level games, most attacks don't target AC?

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

Eh? No, AFAIK it was the Quantum Ogre article that popularised the term Illusionism. It's obviously a different thing from Railroading, which requires force. Illusionism is about creating an illusion of choice, if successful players don't spot it, and it's widely advocated for.

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

I actually have 2 PCs in my Stonehell campaign farming mutant trolls for the XP right now. I kinda admire their determination. If it goes on too long, then not being CRPG characters, the trolls will just leave.

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

If done without coercion, that's Illusionism. If done via GM force - "Infinite Draconians spawn until you get back on the road" then it's Railroading.

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

Some people do use "railroad" to mean "linear plot", yes, ignoring the dictionary & RPG definition of "railroading" as coercive.

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

I felt I levelled up when I got a new job at a more senior rank. I didn't feel I levelled up when I later got turned down for promotion. They could more accurately be called Glory Points, I guess. Or Achievement Points. You don't get them for study/research/training, you get them for...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

War Caster Source: Player's Handbook Prerequisite: The ability to cast at least one spell You have practiced casting spells in the midst of combat, learning techniques that grant you the following benefits: You have advantage on Constitution saving throws that you make to maintain your...

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

Levelling up - I use either the DMG training rules, with time shortened to 2 weeks/1 week with mentor, or else level up during a long rest. I use 1 week long rests (3 days in Odyssey of the Dragonlords). I use 1:1 game: real time (except in Odyssey) and there's 1 or 2 real & game weeks between...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

It's usually 6-12 mooks IME. It's not so great vs hordes of 84 hp trolls, but for gangs of eg 45 hp Wights it's great.
