You might be surprised at how little like regular D&D either of the 5e Middle-earth games are; they change a lot to make 5e fit the setting expectations.

Adventures in Middle-earth didn't provide Dragons or other creatures (e.g. Nazgûl) until later supplements, either. I'm not familiar with The One Ring, but I imagine that did the same. After all, there are space constraints. However, when AiME did present Dragons in the Lonely Mountain Region...

Haven't we already seen an instance of this with Radiant Citadel? It's certainly got a different vibe than the Gygaxian & Hickmanesque stuff I grew up with.

I will say that my version of Neverwinter doesn't look like the one in the movie. It certainly doesn't have a giant arena with magically elevating floor sections. In general, I don't think my PC's day-to-day experience would be all that different whether they were adventuring in the Forgotten...

I haven't read the rest of this thread yet, so maybe the point's already been made, but Greyhawk has owlbears, gelatinous cubes, beholders, mindflayers, drow, and displacer beasts, too.

(I unspoilered this bit, but I didn't think it was particularly spoilery.) I thought so as well. Translating the movie depiction into mechanics, attuning could require a series of saving throws, or an extended skill challenge, with roleplaying support added as desired.
