I'd say that 90%+ of the campaigns I've run and participated in have been PHB only. Not through any nefarious scheme but due to lack of funds for some of the players, the lack of will to read another book (so many other things to do!) and the lack of enthusiasm of reading a book online...

Since I was on Call to the Hospital on Christmas, my daughter and I sat and played board and card games: Phase 10, Scrabble, Forbidden Island, Frog Juice, Moose in the House, Castle Panic and Yahtzee. All are short and easy to play and was some of the most fun I've had in a while.

Yeah, I think that it's quite possible to play in settings with lots of different races. I once ran a campaign that took place on a Nexus World where lots of races from lots of different worlds came together. Kind of a Well of Souls type deal. It was a blast.
