D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

If you're looking in that direction, just make short rests 10 minutes. And then call all of your 10 minute blocks "turns". Thaumaturge.

Mixing tabletop and remote players in a game

I do this about half of the year, because one of my players is a snowbird. We set up an iPad (laptop, or even a smartphone, would work) at one end of the table and go. It's not perfect, but he gets to see and hear a lot of the experience. My suggestion would be to use Google Hangouts instead of...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Interview with the Escapist

My 5e tables have been some of my sneakiest tables, ever. With group checks, at least half the party is able to sneak past goblins (Passive Perception 9) fairly easily. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

And since I've gone ahead and jumped in. This might provide the reports mentioned. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Interview with the Escapist

If you're the DM, couldn't you see the number of HP rolled, compare it to the Ogre's HP, shrug and say it worked? Heck, why even roll at all? Just assume that sleep as written is its combat application. If the target doesn't "have his blood up", the spell is significantly more effective (double...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Man, are you going to be surprised when it comes time for you to present your defense. Thaumaturge.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bonus healing balance question

It doesn't seem too crazy. But (I'm just spitballing here) what if you made a Channel Divinity option that let a cleric cast cure wounds and then cast another spell as a bonus action? Making it a cure wounds makes it bigger, but making it Channel Divinity means it'll only happen once per short...

    D&D 5E (2014) Clarification - Opportunity attacks

Out of your reach, not out of a square in your reach. I agree with fjw70. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Interview with the Escapist

Shouldn't you be playing Magic: The Slumbering, then? Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) Missile weapons atk and dmg.

Ah, I see what you're saying. I read "only use Dex with daggers" as if the "only" modified "Dex" instead of "daggers". Got it. Carry on. Thaumaturge.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

I'm running a 5e conversion of Ruins of Undermountain. My players are paranoid about touching anything, and will spend forever looking at an iron torch holder on the wall. They love to socialize and roleplay. On Saturday we got through 4-5 encounters in 3ish hours. Thaumaturge.

You might want to read the last bit of the rules text you quoted again. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone who got an mm at Gencon want to offer up spoilers to us?

I would treat axiomatic mind as almost immunity to charmed, frightened, and other mind altering spells or conditions. They can't be compelled to act in a manner other than their nature or instructions. If they instructions are to attack the PCs and the wizard casts charm person, I'd have the...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

Exactly. Especially for overland travel adventures/scenes, getting a full 6-8 encounters a day is ridiculous. But spreading those out over a week feels just about right. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Rests: Anyone Tried It?

The bolded bit is the primary reason. Long rests = 5 days & short rests = 8 hours slows the game down. It make things feel a bit more realistic. Instead of healing up overnight, you need 5 days to recover. Some see this as appalling. Some as appealing. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) What direction do you want to see D&D 5e go?

There is a thread here that linked to this, but mearls talks about your concerns in this Escapist interview. He says (paraphrasing) they have good data the splatbook treadmill is bad for the game, and he thinks it'll take about a year for people to start to believe they really are cutting back...

D&D 5E (2014) Resistance and temp. hit points

I say "5". Resistance makes 20=10. Then 5 temps are burned away. Temp hit points don't reduce damage, they just give a buffer against damage received. Thaumaturge.
