D&D 5E (2014) [Rules Question] Two-handed Weapons and Somatic Components

Thanks for the replies, all. I mostly DM, so this is a rule I want to get a handle on before we play. I was originally worried about an EK using a two-handed weapon to get an opportunity attack and then casting shield. But he can't do that, because he only has one reaction. I can't see any...

D&D 5E (2014) I can haz WILD MAGE and the first DRAGONBORN art?

It's almost as if there is a bell-curve of opinion on the matter, and the PH(B) is about in the middle. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) [Rules Question] Two-handed Weapons and Somatic Components

How do two-handed weapons interact with somatic components? Is there no penalty for using a two-handed weapon and wanting to cast spells? If there is a penalty/consequence, what is it? Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone have the book yet?

If you live within driving distance of Indianapolis (and want to pay for a GenCon badge), it is the 15th. But, then, buying from an WPN store is probably easier. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) A Bit More on Subclasses from the Escapist

I'm now both happy and sad. One of my favorite things in an edition is character building. And Klaus and gyor (with help from Mouseferatu) have made my first character for me. Thanks guys. :erm: :D Thaumaturge.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Paladin excerpt

Yeah. But the only time I get to play, as opposed to DM, is in organized play settings, so DMG options are out. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) Let's put together a list of what is supposedly in the DMG.

Why would we talk about gaz...err...stand-alone backyard porches? Are there grues? Thaumaturge.

    D&D 5E (2014) Upcoming Products, Interesting

Maybe the Adventurer's Handbook is an in-world tome meant to instruct one how to deal with the limited omniscient being who controls you. Especially if you are stuck with a micro-managing, rules-lawyering, story-gamer who only talks out of character so you always use third person when you speak...

D&D 5E (2014) A Bit More on Subclasses from the Escapist

Yeah. I usually make a Jedi Knight Fighter/Wizard (or Swordmage or Duskblade) as soon as I can in an edition. For what I'm looking for, Mearls has indicated I should probably go EK/Abjurer. Once the books come out, I'll poke around and see what I think is best, but that's the first build I'm...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Paladin excerpt

Ok. Let the record show you brought up old characters first. One of my first and favorite characters was Pertinax, a Dragonlance (on the other continent) minotaur. He didn't have the stats or ability to multiclass paladin. But...story things happened...and the DM eventually let me take levels...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Paladin excerpt

It might be neat to roll a fighter with the Acolyte background and make him a guy who washed out of paladin basic training. He's trying to do the right thing, but keeps messing up. Have his abilities set up so that he can multi-class paladin later, if he rights his ways. Thaumaturge.

D&D 5E (2014) A Bit More on Subclasses from the Escapist

Mearls has mentioned that Eldritch Knight is a good subclass for the Fighter/Wizard multiclass. I think the intent is to make the F/W multiclass suck less by giving access to added spells and abilities when the F/W takes another level of Fighter. That's just what I've inferred from the things...
