What is a West Marches game?

At the end of the session, you go back to town- there's no choice. It requires either a weird narrative mechanic (you're in a toxic magi-zone and can only spend so much time out adventuring before you're yanked back by your automated detect-o-porters), or everyone just accepts the conceit to...

D&D General The joys of playing a PC with low stats

I tend to do the same, but most of my players, new and old, seem to want to go into DnD with builds prepped n' ready. I guess I understand, they look at all the options and get ideas and want to fulfill those ideas. But I can still be curmudgeoney about it!

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

I just tell herald players "you have an exertion pool that works like the regular martials, except it's equal to your PB, not PB*2." Regarding more precise wording, if you wanted to write it up properly, just use other martials' feature. Because the herald's exertion is the exception, the...

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

I did not know that there was a Prince Valiant show, I only picked up the collected comics a few years ago.

Yeah, I'm quite aware that Heralds end up having a ton of exertion if they burn all their spell slots for it, but that's late in the game, at high levels. The big pains I've seen from heralds that caused the player to multiclass was because early on, they get pretty burned on exertion for...

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

This review of The Grey Knight gives you a good idea of themes that are center to the adventure. I’d screencap or quote but I think the review deserves some views 😆 https://akhelas.com/2024/07/19/review-the-grey-knight/ But I think one big thing is the knights themselves, their vows and...

Don’t sleep on Mythic Bastionland! For OP, I’ll take a look and see if I can grab some examples.

Oh, no, the herald gets the PB pool. If they do multiclass into fighter, they get the standard pb*2 pool. It's strictly a buff to herald, to give them a few points of exertion to play with. If you multiclass into fighter it does nothing.

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

I didn't explain enough. One reason my herald players multiclass to fighter is to get a standard exertion pool. There are other reasons, a better maneuver progression and fighting style etc. But if you give Herald a standard exertion pool, but make it only equal to PB, (they can still burn...

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Archetype Curse scaling & Herald multiclassing

Giving Heralds a pool of exertion = PB (rather than others PB*2) can help avoid the optimal-fighter-dip, I think. It won't help their maneuver progression ofc but I try to make it clear to players that the herald isn't a maneuver-master. That doesn't really sell them though, they still want to...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Steampunk, as others have pointed out, no. I think if OP had used a different term, or asked "is it still a medieval fantasy," I think they'd have gotten different answers.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I'd say that it works better with Law/Chaos rather than good/evil, except that most cases (Moorcock's eteranl champions) more often than not Law was the "right" side and chaos was the "bad" one. I imagine that one could say it was because Chaos was always disrupting the Cosmic Balance cuz...

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

If your group plays once every week or two, and you want to play a long-term campaign, then you're probably going to pick a game and stick to it for the length of that campaign, say a year. If your group is playing multiple times per week, yeah switching games etc. isn't much of a disruption...

D&D General How often do you use Homebrew in your own games?

Magic items and monsters, all the time. I don't create brand new classes/archetypes/ancestries etc. often because there's so much existing stuff to use. I'll make new features etc. by campaign when appropriate, like some mechanical feature from PCs getting titles or big story bumps. Beyond...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I like alignment as a cosmic force, inspired by Moorcock's eternal champion etc. I do find it useful as a rough shorthand for NPCs, but that could be served by a sentence about their personality as well, or how some other games do it: an adjective and a noun. "Inquisitive Scamp," "Amenable...
