D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

Yes, and if that's what the other characters would have done then IMO they should bloody well have done it long since. Just because a character is someone's PC doesn't and shouldn't make it immune to such things.

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

For me, the answer is in the question: I have my character do what it would do because it's what the character would do. And yes, that reasoning is about as circular as it gets. :) Why? Because if I'm playing a character true to itself - which, IMO, should always be priority number one - then...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Anything at and over 3rd Cleric would be major spell use for me: Silence and Hold Person can change an entire combat; and at 5th level they get Prayer which is also huge (+1 might not seem like much but when your whole side gets it the effects add up fast!).

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

For NPCs like that I always convert them to having levels of Fighter, therefore the Lieutenants here would be 4th-level Fighters. In other words, I follow the 3e line of thinking - only I got there about 15 years before 3e came out. :) The leader is an 8th level Cleric, the guards are 6th...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Might be as simple as his gaining access to a proper word processor by 1978 as opposed to his manual typewriter. I suspect the page-85 table is a late add-on to allow DMs a means of working out xp values for their homebrew monsters, without regard for what Appendix E has to say. Or, flip side...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

So in short, if a paralysis-hold-stun-etc. effect renders* the victim completely unable to fight or defend it's an EAXPB but if it merely renders the victim less able to fight or defend it's an SAXPB. Duration irrelevant. Seems a simple enough rule of thumb from here. :) * - or potentially...

    D&D 5E (2024) One Store's Sales (D&D 2014 & 2024)

Even when playing online, a paper character sheet is still the way to go IMO. If nothing else, you get to decide the format it's in and what goes where etc., and that alone makes things light-years easier to find than using someone else's format and layout.

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

This all makes lots of sense. Nothing to add, really. :)

    D&D 5E (2024) One Store's Sales (D&D 2014 & 2024)

Ah, of course. I saw "23-Aug" and assumed it meant August the 23rd, and so on. Silly me. :)

    D&D 5E (2024) One Store's Sales (D&D 2014 & 2024)

In the OP table, the dates given are kinda meaningless without a year attached to each one.

D&D General What D&D Would You Use For A Dungeon Focused Campaign?

Anything pre-2e or that reasonably-well emulates such. 2e with its emphasis on storytelling isn't as good a fit for dungeoncrawling, which is usually more story-emergent; and 3e (and similar) only works well for dungeoncrawling at low to very low character levels. 4e and 5e (and similar) are...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Maybe split it out such that 'restraint' means restraint without associated damage (always SAXPB) and 'crush' means restraint that packs associated damage along with it (SAXPB except EAXPB if the potential damage is over a certain amount). Or, split it out such that restraint of any kind gives...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Reading this makes me think of another catch-all term that could apply to some monsters: restraint. This could be a SAXPB bonus for anything that has as part of its core attack the ability to physically restrain its victim: --- trappers, lurkers, cloakers --- anything with grabby bindy...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Known: There were holes in the design, whether intentionally put there* or not Learned since: The designers knew very early on that at least some of these holes existed Learned since: The designers did not fix these holes. Resulting options: --- the holes could be left as they were - play on...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I've seen scry-and-fry happen numerous times in 1e, never mind 3e where it was far easier to pull off. It's a thing, IME.

AD&D 1E What does this (d8, d6) dice notation mean in the DMG?

Whenever I design a table for almost anything I always make the table's range either open-ended (meaning I might have to roll a d57 or something because right now the table only has 57 options) or bigger than the number of options with a gap included to allow for future expansion as ideas come...

AD&D 1E What does this (d8, d6) dice notation mean in the DMG?

2-5 is the same average as d6 only with the ends filed off. Easy enough to do as d4+1.

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

I think no matter how finely we try to tune this, there's still going to be situations where it just comes down to eyeballing it at the time. My head. I made those numbers up as examples to show what I was talking about with damage thresholds. Draining blood miiiiiight be covered by the...

Gaming Cons Have Changed (I'm Old)

GenCon comps their more prolific GMs (or used to, anyway, no idea if that's still the case) and turning in the players' tickets to the organizers was proof you actually ran the game you said you were going to run.

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Blinding spittle is just another form of missile discharge, only with an effect other than damage. That said, blindness maps to an offensive spell effect and thus could count as EAXPB. Tough call. For squirt acid and low-end breath weapons the easiest answer is a maximum-damage cutoff: if it...
