D&D General Settings of Hope vs Settings of Despair

My games tend to be more middle ground, leaning a bit towards hopeful. Sometimes I run despair, but that's uncommon. Perhaps especially because of the state of the world. I want to run something that leans towards were I want things to go, rather than something that just feeds on and...

I like Tyrants of the Underdark even more. Both are great games.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I'd be curious to know as well. It has been a very long time since I've done retail. Well before the influencer craze that has hit us.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

You'd think, but way back when I did retail sales I worked at a bed and bath store. A woman walked up to me with an arm full of stuff she had picked out for her new bathroom and asked me what color I thought would go best with her bathroom(I forget the color now). I recommended a different...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I used to count how many of them I saw on the road, but now it's too many to bother with. Hell, there are several that drop kids off at my son's school. At this point I just look for weird colors.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

That's really weird, because yesterday I saw my first woman cybetruck truck driver and had to do a double take.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

The 1st edition was 1e. There were other games of D&D like the one you are referencing there, but those weren't editions of D&D the way that 1e-5e are. Calling anything but 1e the first edition is just going to cause confusion.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The spell lists in the monster books are just examples of the spells some of those creatures have handy. The books tell DMs to feel free to swap out spells as they see fit. A lot more creatures than you are listing can and do have access to dispel magic if the DM wants to change things up.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The games I ran all went to between 15th and 20th level and I had no issues with 2 short rests per day. The same with the games I played in that went up that high, which was most of them. During those games, not a single class went unrepresented. That means that if you are seeing these...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Not really. You can look at the animal section of the MM and see what intelligence means when compared to real life versions. A 6 isn't just 10% lower than average. That's just a necessary mechanical evil to keep a bad stat roll or an 8 from an array from being debilitating. Edit: Now that...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

First, it's not pointless. We are discussing the rather meaningful point right now. Second, why assume gross incompetence on the part of DMs? I've managed to follow that advice since day one of my running 5e WITHOUT mechanics to banhammer me if I step out of line. I'm I so super special for...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Not me. The game. The game determined that 8 is below average for intelligence. The game determined that intelligence represents the ability to reason, recall, and mental acuity. The game determined for some silly reason that the same 8 int can cast 9th level spells. I'm just pointing out...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The problem with this is that smart wizards, which is almost all of them, would figure out a way to draw in that residual energy over time to fuel any spell they know. They'd be able to cast every spell as a ritual, with the amount of time needed being based on the spell level of the spell...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The 5e PHB says the party should get about 2 short rests before the long rest happens. If the DM follows that in his pacing, or just as a hard limit like a lot of DMs do, then the short rest abuse is non-existent.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Sort of. What I do is have the players roll 5d6-2L twice, 4d6-L twice, and 3d6 twice. They have to assign the dice to the various stats before rolling starts. What typically happens is the 5d6-2L gets placed into the best two for the class the player wants his PC to be. the 4d6-2L into the...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Right. It's not possible for 5.5e to have corrected the math so that 1 fight is what it is balanced around. It only made minor adjustments, which means that the problem is still there. They corrected it a bit, but it's far from fixed.
