D&D General D&D The Immersive Quest - My Adventure & Review

I didn't check for how many went in alone when I was there, but I think you'd enjoy it on your own! The challenges in the main 'dungeon' part are intended* to be completed by each individual, so even if you went as a group you'd have to either split up or do each one sequentially. And the...

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Oh, this one for me is a total "yes yes yes!" Top Secret was my first RPG and I'll always have a soft spot for good superspy action. (I even got to play in a James Bond game recently at a convention, using the 1983 rules :)) That's an interesting one... I last tried Paranoia some 30ish years...

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Genres-wise, I would go with horror in general and Cthulhu specifically. The big-C seems super popular right now (both in TTRPGs but also board games and even finding its way into other genres and mini games), but it holds no interest for me at all. I also haven't tried a soap-opera-esque game...

Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

Aye. While the session phases were straightforward, it took about 3 to 4 sessions before it fully clicked for me (in one of those hilarious, "just doing something around the house when it hit me" kind of ways): each of the encounters are, in a way, played backwards to more traditional cycles...

You're approached by a Hollywood exec...

BattleTech has a lot that could be mined and brought to the screen. It's perhaps not the best-known property, but at the same time it both has proven longevity as well as a ream of lore + novels written for it. And it's got a good mix of 'mech action + politics + personal arcs and dramas...

Haha, hilarious, that's a smile for me too. :)

D&D General The D&D Memes Thread

Ahh, this is the kind of continuity and longevity that I love the about this hobby! From the 80s to today, that question from those unfamiliar with RPGs forever endures. :D (Funnily enough, I was also recently telling someone at work about playing games at the local convention and got that...

Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

Hmmm! I adore Wanderhome and its pastoral playstyle (albeit one that can also be laden with some rich vibes and emotional exploration)... I'm going to keep an eye on this one too. :)

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

Cortex Prime does something like this by using it's Challenges module (https://www.talesofxadia.com/compendium/rules-primer/playing-the-game#ChallengesOvercomingExtendedObstacles) and it's Timed Action mode. The later is the more familiar turn-based individual tracking action (aka 'standard'...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

That said and in addition, in my experience even a standard 5 orcs in a room can also work and be an engaging encounter with properly chosen orcs (a pair or trio of brutes, a solider, leader, maybe a lurker). The tactical bits can be there to make for a solid base, and then every bit you add on...

Possum Creek Joins Steve Jackson Games as New RPG Imprint

The system is very much tied into what makes the game wonderful, facilitating world creation during play and allowing for both lightweight pastoral exploration as well as deeper trauma healing-type experiences. Fortunately, as a separate imprint it can stay fully in its current form w/o needing...

Congrats to Possum, Jay, and Ruby for this! Wanderhome is an amazing piece of work.

    Canada Worldbuilding

Definitively a woot! for the Crooked Floor reference! Maybe it's my nostalgia speaking, but I'd love a variant where it's semi-truce area where everyone trades, run by a group who worships and restores the lights (and hope that the light keeps the dark ones away). Still opportunities for areas...

    How often do you play?

I put down weekly, though it's closer to 1.23 times per week, as I have a weekly group + a monthly group. :) (Ok, in reality since we do miss some weekly games it averages out to less than weekly... :P)

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

In my main group, our system choice is dependent on what campaign/world/story we want to play in. Right now for rules we are splitting our time between D&D 4e, Cortex Prime, Troubleshooters, and my own RPG system (called the Aurora RPG engine). Our currently dormant games use(d) 2d20, 5e...

How many character sheets is too many?

Looking at all the character sheets I have completely-healthily-no-obsession-here designed, I'd say about 400. ;) Oh! For a single character for a single game... well in that case, usually I try to keep it to 1 double-sided letter-sized page, max. This keeps everything handy and only...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

IIRC, 1-2 soldiers was the recommended maximum to include. At face value Brutes often look to be tougher/meaner, but their lower defenses means they go down quicker (and more satisfyingly).

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

Multiclassing in 4e, especially the power-swap feats, is interesting. I've oft toyed with getting rid of needing a feat to swap powers (ie once you take the entry level MC feat you can eventually mimic the swap feats w/o spending them) -- often, swapping the feat may give more flavour and...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

Ayup, that's the path to take to create or adjust a non-MM3/MV opponent. The "halve hitpoints, double damage" "fix" that is commonly bandied about was both a) not what MM3-math did and b) if memory serves came from a very specific instance someone was choosing to do for a very specific reason...
