D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Thats fair. Folks who enjoy 5E constantly being told its bad and that being popular is no substitute for "objectively" better design but they are just too stupid to understand that is also not particularly friendly. Just sayin.

So almost nobody is like the O'Briens? That is what seems unlikely.

While true, I do like that they addressed Molly a bit in the O'Brien family dynamics.

Spoilers Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Some fair points. On the other hand, with Kira and Dax running around bucking trends, it was nice to see a traditional female type character for contrast. I think the big idea was this kind of relationship between Keiko and Miles must be enacted out all over the federation. You often dont see it...

    Contemporary Simulationist TTRPGs [+]

One of the arguments I often see is that simulation must be a complete reality simulator or its no simulation at all. Another is that folks want a game, and not a simulation, as if the two are mutually exclusive. Though, a lot of simulation can live in the abstract. For example, the 5E 6-8...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Some of it is the freedom that comes with role playing. Folks are like, "I can haz rat bastards as PC?" You see it in video games a lot where open worlds begun and folks do awful things to NPCs. Part of it is simple guilty pleasure in engaging in things typically out of bounds by game design...

D&D General Combat Against Player Engagement: A Systemic Challenge

You are on to something here. I run a lot of Traveller and I tend to have narrative driven combats a lot more than I do with D&D/PF. Part of that is the Traveller system is different. At first, I thought I was more comfortable experimenting as a GM with how to run the game. Then, I realized a...

What makes a teaser or trailer work for you?

Pretty much this. The trailer leaves me wanting to see and find out, not like I got everything I need in 90 seconds. A good one to pick on is the recent Chris Pratt sits in a chair movie. The trailer basically gives away the entire plot and the impression it leaves is that this is a feature...

D&D General Combat Against Player Engagement: A Systemic Challenge

I guess I take issue with the idea of "wasted turns." The character tried to connect with the enemy and end the fight, but didnt accomplish that and now the fight rages on. It actually feels a little worse for a caster becasue they dont get to at will all day long (in most editions) with their...

There is more than meets the eye behind that WB/P merger that I cant really go into. All I will say is it would not mean better quality programming for folks, maybe just higher quantity for a time.

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

I know the history. It just surprises me how nonchalant WotC was about the change over. Then again, many a gamer didnt think much differently. I remember the "Paizo announces adventure path, setting, and continuation of 3E" thread where posters here at EN World were laughing about how "Paizo...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

Well, that was because Paizo had to build a bridge WotC burned the old one down. I get why they did it. They just assumed everyone would eventually shut up and play the new edition. Its just interesting how confident they were that things wouldnt play out any other way.

Yeah the approach chosen of light a match toss on bridge behind you was certainly a choice by WotC in 2008.

D&D General Combat Against Player Engagement: A Systemic Challenge

I was very surprised to find the opposite. I started playing online during the pandemic and actually enjoyed how on task the games were. I returned to in person recently and we barely get anything done. I enjoy the game but feel like I’d get more out of it if it was online.
