How long before VTTs support TTRPGs with AI GMs?

Could certainly help with the “GM shortage”. What will be really interesting is if AI starts shaping GM behavior of actual humans. 🤔

Traveller: the iconic science fiction roleplaying game

Yes, you nailed it. The beats Traveller and it’s setting go for wouldn’t be popular dramas until decades later. Empire in B5, rag tag crew keeping a ship flying in Cowboy Bebop and Firefly. Mysterious missing species in Mass Effect. Etc… I was drawn to Traveller cause it left a lot of the...

What is your favourite part of TTRPGing?

I like the crunchy wargame bits and the role playing. I enjoy creating worlds, spinning up engaging plots, and acting out NPCs. I also really enjoy playing a character exploring a world and leaving their mark while building them mechanically.

haha this reminds me of a discussion with a buddy 20 years ago why low cal beer is "light" instead of diet.

Traveller: the iconic science fiction roleplaying game

It had the opposite effect in my early games. Folks just wanted to find the best trade route as adventuring was too dangerous! I think folks often confuse career paths in Traveller with class in D&D. Honestly, Traveller careers are just skill delivery systems with events to flesh out how the...

Traveller: the iconic science fiction roleplaying game

Yeap, I knew a few that loved that granular aspect. I just felt it was too distracting from what I wanted to do which was adventure. Though, I see some silmilar lines forming like the old school survival sim vs modern adventure plot style of gaming. I think some of the rub here might be that...

Traveller: the iconic science fiction roleplaying game

Oh...yeah... I kinda blocked that freight part from my mind but I know exactly what you are talking about. Not only did some of my early groups abandon any adventure as "too dangerous to risk our mortgaged ship" but figuring out caro/goods/lots/planet markets ate so much game time...

D&D General Charisma Checks gone Horribly Wrong - Can you Relate?

I think the issue is looking at info being gated like a room with a locked door. Simple roll, simple open. Simple diplo/intimi/bluff get info. For me its more of a social exploration experience. The opening check might simply be for the starting disposition of the NPC. The conversation still...

Traveller: the iconic science fiction roleplaying game

If I had to guess it was more about relating the RPG to media being consumed by folks. There was a fantasy explosion in the 70's that D&D lead right into. Then, in the 80's video games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy took the formula and trained youngsters on how to do it. Which led into the...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Thing is YZE games are unique in experience compared to one another despite sharing a foundation. YZE works in a way that I believe FFG Gensys was intended to work. Or I should say it works in delivery in ways 5E reskins don’t.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

There was a trend for a while, I wouldnt say was just rules lite, but experience specific. Instead of generic do anything systems, folks were developing a lot of bespoke games that delivered a particular experience. Bladerunner for example, was such a system. There were a few complaints that the...

Spoilers What do casual fans get wrong about Star Wars?

I think we have a winner here. As a causal, I very much liked the ambiance and experience I got with OT SW. I like the world being mysterious and with every piece that explained things deeper the less interested I got. At some point, the world felt much smaller, much less alien. They stopped...

    Battletech Public Playtest Thread

I didn’t like the barrel field support rules in smallish pick up games but yeah I can see times they work. If you are doing a narrative GM run opfor against your players they are great.
