D&D General Greyhawk fans - How to fit older modules with Age of Worms

Crazy that three DMs were all considering running this at the same time! @Distracted DM @MGibster @earthsea_wizard did you start and how are the campaigns going? I finished the campaign last year after about two years DMing it start to finish. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Converted to FR though, as I...

D&D General Does anyone recall coming across any magic weapons that return when thrown...other than Dwarven Thrower, Hammer of Thunderbolts or magic boomerangs?

So the Thri-keen use a Chatkcha that returns back to their hand without being magical. The Chakram mentioned above by @Tonguez is also a sacred weapon of Shar from the forgotten Realms as it strongly resembles her holy symbol. Also returns without being magical. Sometimes called an infinity...

Really good structure for Factions (system agnostic)

Having a measurement for the relationship as well is probably a useful tool too. I quite like a simple slider. The title in brackets is for PCs that have joined the faction. You can move up and down the slider and it’s possible - depending on class, species, other faction allegiance - to start...

D&D 5E (2024) Can a Warlock who swaps out Pact of Chain keep his familiar?

I’m with @Clint_L . It stays around and betrays the Warlock viciously at the first opportunity. Any tendency to obedience or loyalty the familiar had is relinquished when the invocation was. I think you know it’s wrong to keep it as is, which is why you asked the question.

Really good structure for Factions (system agnostic)

So all @pemerton ’s talk of ‘Best Interests’ and using them to provide alternative spurs to story than maps and events, reminded me of the Faction write ups in Dungeons of Drakkenheim sand box adventure. I’ve seen similar attempts to do this in other products like Lords of Darkness (The...

    D&D 5E (2024) Representing afflictions in D&D 5e - which do you think work best/least dislike.

There was something I missed out actually. Is there mileage in malignancy effects being represented by a flaw. Similar to how madness is represented in 2024? A roleplaying trait which the player is invited to fold into their character without a mechanical effect? For instance if the disease...

A few things I really like about WFRP

I have more than a couple of criticisms for Cubicle 7. They can be flighty, spread themselves too thin and can take a long time to release stuff without telling us. Them not listening to their customers and changing the rules accordingly definitely isn’t one of them. They have been extremely...

D&D 5E (2024) Tomb of Annihilation: likes and Dislikes

Interesting. My players never went that way so I only skimmed it. When I run again I would want to put far more effort into the five factions. Introduce them right in Port Nyazaru and give them competing goals and interests. Similar to how Dungeons of Drakkenheim run it. Flaming Fist Merchant...

A few things I really like about WFRP

I love VTT, but I’ve also played a long campaign face to face. Again with people new to the system. Lots of the folks that play VTT don’t play Foundry either so don’t have the automation that Foundry brings. I think the suggestion that I only like the system because it’s on VTT is untrue. I...

D&D 5E (2024) Tomb of Annihilation: likes and Dislikes

The Foundry module is pretty cool. It comes with an option on initialization to chose between 2014 or update to 2024 which I thought was pretty neat. Getting a 2024 update for a module is nice.

A few things I really like about WFRP

You won’t regret it. If you’ve played the Warhammer board game Blackstone Fortress it’s got a similar vibe to the shared dice pool in that system. It encourages communication between players in combat and gets people thinking about the get their fellow members are doing.

A few things I really like about WFRP

Ok that makes sense. I couldn’t disagree more with you, but you’re clear about your reasons. For me advancement is extremely straightforward. You advance anything on your character sheet a point at a time and if it’s not in your career it costs double and requires a trainer. I don’t now how an...

    Alternatives to map-and-key

That all makes sense. I couldn’t play this way with NPC agendas and goals out on the table upfront because for me that destroys investigation and mystery. Part of the enjoyment of roleplaying is discovering these things and working out how they fit together through my enquiries and roleplaying...

D&D 5E (2024) Tomb of Annihilation: likes and Dislikes

That’s really funny. My group went a completely different way and didn’t see any of those places!

A few things I really like about WFRP

So the core advantage rules were designed to create a sense of momentum in combat. Earlier editions were accused for being to whiffly - you could spend round after round ineffectually whaling on your opponent to no avail. Instead advantage meant every time you won an opposed test you would gain...

D&D 5E (2024) Tomb of Annihilation: likes and Dislikes

So much good stuff here. Specifically on the death curse I couldn’t agree more. I figured it could be something afflicting the continent primarily - a good origin story for monsters, reason players can’t be resurrected normally and general malaise giving Chult a bit of a grimdark vibe. Then at...

    Alternatives to map-and-key

I get that. Makes sense. These add a lot of depth to NPCs. Make running NPCs much easier and give the PCs lots or interact with. So much so that I don’t think they need to be mutually exclusive with Map&Key or Events. Rather they would enhance any structure they are used in.
