    D&D 5E (2024) Representing afflictions in D&D 5e - which do you think work best/least dislike.

Back in 3e and Pathfinder 1 the many varied afflictions: poisons, diseases, curses, life draining, aging etc were generally handled though ability score damage either temporary or permanent. Purple worm poison will reduce your Constitution score, filth fever reduces your Dex and so on. 5e has...

D&D 5E (2024) Tomb of Annihilation: likes and Dislikes

So Foundry has released Tomb of Annihilation as a module for D&D a couple of weeks back and I am seriously considering running the campaign again online. I love Foundry and the tools it gives me as a DM. I ran it Face to Face when it first came out and felt it was definitely a cracking...

D&D 5E (2024) Paizo Abomination Vaults on Dndbeyond!

I think this will be good for Paizo and good for 5e. Abomination Vaults wouldn’t have been my choice because I’m not a fan of dungeon crawling but after this and Kingmaker, I hope they continue. Even if I’m not playing on beyond, having access to the maps and tokens in a digital format is still...

    Alternatives to map-and-key

Those all sound like goals or motivations. Is that a fair way of characterizing the description you just gave? For instance an NPC I ran on Tuesday night. Wanted to find out what happened to her missing husband Was scared of and wanted to avoid the watch (In this case the PCs) Was scared of...

A few things I really like about WFRP

What are some of the quirks would you change in a 4.5? I won’t lie, the quirkiness is a feature not a bug for me, but I am interested as to what you would change? You’re totally right on the books. I’m using a lot of the stuff from Lustria for my next run through of Tomb of Annihilation. The...

A few things I really like about WFRP

So there are a few things I would say to this. Firstly, modifiers based on choices/environmental factors are amazing. They turn combat from two groups of folks wailing on each other to a game of tactical choices, where it’s not just about stripping wounds off folks as fast as they can. I use...

    Alternatives to map-and-key

Sorry, despite quoting the rules I still don’t know what a ‘best interest’ is? I get that they should be used to target PCs but what are they? I’m not trying to be obtuse. The phrase itself is somewhat ambiguous. I feel like the quoted test seems to assume I know what this phrase should mean.

RPG Print News – Warhammer, Old-School Essentials, and More

It’s so much fun. I really love this product. It would be cross system but so much of the fluff works well with a product like Dragon Heist or Keys from the Golden Vault.

    Alternatives to map-and-key

I get that you have framed your argument in relation to a specific type of map/key style or event style. But these are the examples you have selected. By choosing a low quality example as the alternative to your proposal you’re actually undermining your proposal, rather than setting up against a...

    Alternatives to map-and-key

I think the opening post was very interesting right up to painting event based adventures as railroading and map & key based adventures as linear. That isn’t automatically the case. Event based adventures might be railroading but they easily might not. Key and map might be linear - depending on...

    Today I learned +

Today I learned that DMing for total strangers can really work out. Not every online group of strangers will work but when it does it’s great.

When you play in person, where do you play? (Poll)

Ha ha yeah I travel from Birmingham to Kent and back. I’m that dedicated and @GuyBoy is that that good a DM. Though we do play face to face monthly for a two day weekend. I don’t think I could do it for a 3 hour session! 😂 I thought you were wowed by the fact that I managed to persuade 4...

When you play in person, where do you play? (Poll)

We play at a players house and it works well. I travel about 3 hours each way to get to the game so it wouldn’t work for folks to come to me. In fact come to think of it, I’ve ran games at 4 different players houses and never at my own. My advice would be to find a player with a big house/flat...

What’s going on at Gen Con this year?

Last year we had the first physical copies of the 2024 PHB. This year appears to be silent. What’s going on folks at GenCon? Any announcements? Any surprises? Here’s hoping it’s so good and engrossing that no-one who is there has time to tell us about it!

D&D General Simple Rules for a Dark Sun Game

My advice would be not to boost ability scores and spell DCs/to hit. Find other ways to make them better/harder. The above mods mess with bounded accuracy quite a bit. It can risk making Dark Sun campaign very easy instead of tough death world.

D&D 5E (2024) Effects that kill you at 0 hp

I think new DMs with new players is pretty much fine as it has always been. The problem is new DMs with veteran players. Unreasonable expectations.

D&D 5E (2024) Effects that kill you at 0 hp

I get the point is you won’t get a consistent experience if one group has 3 players and one has 6. Or if one group is novice and one is veteran. One contains optimizers one contains casuals. DM adjustment is how it becomes more consistent.

    Are Ghosts Real? (a poll)

Yeah so there were specific continuity issues with that vivid memory. That I saw the effect on the ceiling of the room for instance, but for the period i remembered I slept on the bottom level of a bunkbed. I stopped sleeping in a single bed when my brother reached about 2. I distinctly remember...
