Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

I’d say the gameplay loop of anticipating the spells needed and being limited to 60 is a bit more similar to how a Wizard prepares for an adventuring day than playing, say, poker

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

Bandits usually stop fighting after you've split their leader in two

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

I'm just saying that a game based around D&D and its original Vancian casting would be a huge commercial failure and very unpopular. Wouldn't you rather be able to use all of your spells all the time?

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

Man that sounds like a terrible resource management system. Absolutely nobody would buy or play that game.

Upcoming Superhero RPGs Coincidence or Zeitgeist

Eh, I feel like the Superhero moment is already at its tail end. But for Outgunned it makes sense because they're already building upon their Action Movie base. Speaking of Zeitgeist, has anyone done a Squid Games-esque TTRPG yet? If you think about it, it's basically a Level 0 dungeon funnel...

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

For extra houserule spice you can make it a 2d6+mod roll and use this table and do Failure, Partial Success (Succeed, but the Dungeon makes a Move on you) and Success

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

Some people like that and SD is designed to scratch that itch. I'm not saying its bad or the wrong way to have fun, it's just not how the rules intend you to create a character. I've played with groups that also think the character creation process of the already considered light 5E14 is a...

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

In a white room fight without improvisation, the goblins are aware of the Thief. The Thief doesn't get to sneak off or backstab.

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

It lets you pick a class you're working towards rather than just rolling a person and seeing what job fits them best

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

I'm sorry, but flat out saying that magic is being nerfed out of the game is nonsense, a lvl 1 Wizard gets three level 1 spells and will be on average >50% to cast it and getting to cast it again. How many spells and how many usages does a lvl 1 magic-user get in ODND 1E B/X and 2E?

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

Yeah like I said. People are free to make Shadowdark Heartbreakers, the lack of CC-BY is not an obstacle. They're just not allowed to copypaste slop something together

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

Nothing is stopping you from making a derivative game that plays basically like Shadowdark. We have a million OSR Games that don't let you reprint wording verbatim to protect their intellectual property. Also TSR era games aren't open either. Last time I checked the 1e/2e materials still cost...
