D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I'd probably use an existing stat block like the Bard, Legendary from Monster Manual Expanded 3 (CR 8, but its got low HP and I can knock off the Legendary Actions and it'll be fine.) Or Edgin Darvis from Honor Among Thieves (CR 5) Or just make one myself:

Just to backtrack for a moment: a proposed solution to the Multiclassing issue might be to raise the requirements. For starters, each class gets two ASIs like Paladin, Monk, and Ranger: one at 15 and one at 13. Each additional class you add causes these numbers to increase by +1 (maybe +2? Not...

I mean I'd wager there are Paladin players who don't like the nerf to Smite.

You know I'm also unhappy with the change to Counterspell but I feel like this is an unwarranted level of salt over it. 😅

Since people are giving more specific thoughts: Species should have been Ancestry, but the options are fine. I like that Cthonic and Abyssal tieflings are core, I like having multiple Goliath lineages even if some of them have off-putting pastel color schemes. Not a fan of how backgrounds have...

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

Seriously. The Ricochet weapon action in TOTV had me considering making a sling-based fighter but then I realized that 1d4 damage just wasn't worth it.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I've seen way more PCs die in 5E than I ever did in 4E.

    Surely that can't include Coutnerspell.

Yeah it would have to be built from the ground up with these things in mind, including the ability to disable things from the compendium that you don't want.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

What if I say they have notes about how they did it but they're the indecipherable, idiosyncratic scrawlings of a singularly gifted savant? I get wanting consistency but there are some things PCs just shouldn't have access to. Just as there are PC abilities that NPCs shouldn't get, if for no...

Makes me wish there was a generic 5E VTT engine where I could take a grab bag of what I like from every version of the game.

D&D General Satine Phoenix is trying to make a comeback

Everyone who gets called out and shut down for abuse tries to make a comeback eventually. Sometimes they even succeed. This doesn't surprise me.

In terms of highest proportion of good sub classes I would say it's actually Tasha's Cauldron. Sure it has the bonkers Cleric subclasses but it's not an accident that so many of the others ended up in the 2024 PHB.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I wasn't being snarky, was pointing out that a high difficulty encounter has a chance of wiping a party even in 5E. There's no point in making rules for anything higher because at that point so much depends on planning, luck, and whether or not the party knows when discretion is the better part...

If I were rating it on art and presentation it'd get a 9 or 10 but as I must consider the rules, I gave it a 7. For comparison, I'd give 5E 2014 a 6 if the core books were all we had. MTOF, VGM, and Xanathar's Guide were where the game really came into its own IMO.

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

Incidentally, this is one of the reasons I think WOTC should revisit good ideas from 4E more readily in future: the fans that reflexively hate it and all of its trappings are no longer half the customer base. Given the proliferation of great OSR games, they're probably not even a quarter.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

This is true. Honestly I just kind of prefer the Legendary Archmage from @Nixlord's MME3 to either the 2014 or 2024 Archmages.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I agree with this in general but I do have to wonder about the long-term effects to both game and lore of the specific implementation. Arcane Burst as depicted in the monster manual is an absurdly powerful ability compared to any PC-facing at-will power, able to do 108 damage a round without...
