GMing: How to fudge NOT using the dice.

well that's a nice black and white way of looking at it. Over the last 40 years I've had far more players lose it when I didn't fudge and just killed them, ( Not counting the dragon lance player that kept losing his naughty word because the players weren't doing what the books did.), than players...

GMing: How to fudge NOT using the dice.

I generally find this only works up to about level 10. After that most of those things are useless if you over do it.

    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

no but the npc should be able to convince the NPC's that what he is saying is something he completely believes. (even if he doesn't) . If a PC can roll to determine if an NPC believes thier BS why is it loss of agency if an NPC can do the same thing. I think you are confusing agency with the...

GMing: How to fudge NOT using the dice.

well the legendary mechanics include things like the monster can just "choose" to save. But somehow that's not considered fudging..... LOL

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

And yet sometimes they do even when the GM tries to prevent "agency". The agency isn't the problem in this hypothetical. The humans are

Not all early GMs were that way.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

That for most people fun Is more important than the rules? No false dichotomy there. Some people love the rules and nothing but the rules, more people love rule 0. I didn't say there weren't people on the other side. I simply said rule 0 seems to be eternal and the other side failed to kill it.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Since the late 70's a small number of rules lawyers have been trying to kill rule 0. Even before it had a name and definition. Mockery of monte haul tables, or those that had made it to unlikely levels abounded. But you can't kill an idea and it turns out most people prioritize fun over...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Bounded Accuracy apply to skill checks? Thoughts on an old Alexandrian article

so a bad skill system means the guy that didn't take the skill fails. Seems like a normal skill system. To me a skill system that anyone can succeed on isn't really a skill system and you might as will do away with the skills system and just DM hand waive it to move things on.

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

I Simply replied to the idea that it was hard to prevent crafting that way. Nothing was said about could or should. Its. Not hard to stop crafting or magic item shops. it is hard to stop players from wanting those parts of the game.

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

DEpends on the game. If you are facing the destruction of all that you love from multiple fronts then you may not have downtime. Ive played a multiyear caMpaign like that. I wouldnt run one like that but its not hard to put players in situations where time off is bad things for all the...

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

Or have a game with strict timelines. Either way is a bit cheeesey but will limit items. Of course if items are easy for playerz to craft or buy they are for villains as well.

    D&D 5E (2024) Flanking no more in D&D 2024?

I think PF2E took the majority of the players that required tactical encounter each combat. DnD is probably just letting that small group that takes more resources to design for go. It seems to me that 5E has almost been defined by mot being the crunchy pathfinder or 3e game and that seems...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Rarer but harxer encounters is still attrition. You just have one loooong fight instead of several smaller ones.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

In a game where players are measured by Hitpoints gear and stuff that make them harder to hit and let them do more damage how do you get rid of attrition? That's really the elephant in the room. Made worse by long rest and short rest rules that were designed to stop the complaining from...
