    What's Your Price Limit?

Comparing the dollar amount of RPG books to entertainment per hour isn't a fair comparison to say - a video game or movie. If I were running Starfinder, a big portion of that investment is my prep, the campaign design, the adventure creation. It's not just the "$4 per hour of fun" for the players.

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

Sounds right. Most of my campaigns end around level 5 out of burnout or TPK. IMO, the main reason games don't last to high levels is that it takes too long and it gets boring. A multi-year epic is a lot to dedicate to any regular social gathering. The expectations should be brought better in...

The official EN World puppy/doggo thread

@payn my condolences. We said goodbye to our girl in January.

That sounds about right. Maybe that ends up being Daggerheart ... I did really enjoy running that as a one-shot recently. The main issue is that it's not "trad play" (pretty different from D&D mechanically).

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

That has been my main issue in finding an OSR system that works for me: none match my groups' play. We came in with Post Hickman Revolution 2E. Some say that OSR system is 5E ... which isn't helpful when you're trying to have a different experience than 5E provides.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I've watched several hours of Shadowdark content. I saw Kelsey Dionne run it live at Origins. I know many Actual Plays aren't true to the style of a game (for example, many D&D tables aren't like Critical Role). I don't know how accurate the experience is. But I can say that none of the games...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

There's a part of me that really wanted to like Shadowdark. After all, I backed the deluxe "everything" version of the latest Kickstarter. And after signing up for games at a convention, I purchased a regular copy of the rules (since the previous hadn't been shipped). I'm having an Internet...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I think that there's a disconnection between GMing styles and what Shadowdark could do well. First off, Basic D&D adventures from the early 80s are largely monster hotels. I think there's some gaming revisionism that says people were incredibly clever, mature players back then. But let's be...

I sent bad reviews for the Lurking Fears crew to Arcane Library on the provided surveys, FWIW. Still, I think the math behind the game isn't tuned to what I would enjoy. You fail a lot more than I think is acceptable.

    What's Your Price Limit?

I recently noticed that the Player Core and GM Core for Starfinder 2 are $70 each. That's $140 for basically the same material that was $60 in 2018. Add the monster book and that's $210 to get into Starfinder 2. Yes, inflation. Yes, tariffs. I get it. Paizo can charge what they want. Maybe...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

In every game I played, the danger was poorly telegraphed, whether in my friend's game or the professional convention games. None of the games used Morale or Reaction rolls ... just fights to the death (usually the PCs). Concerning spell failure ... I think I had a +2 to cast (from a Talent and...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Off the top of my head Ideas I'd like for the thief... A talent that lets you hide while being observed, even if it's just for a split second. And maybe with a mechanic where you can lose it (like a spell casting roll). [Because in my game it was almost impossible to ever get to backstab. Or...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

It really needs more stuff that isn't combat-focused, then. Talents that aren't 100% combat bonuses. Challenges in the book beyond monsters. If it's based on B/X, we're talking about fighting in dungeons.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I wasn't the GM, but my thought is that he wanted to maintain some level of verisimilitude. Each time we started with a new group, we represented another dungeon faction. I guess I'm not the OSR type. I don't have nostalgia for this kind of play. I like the idea of lighter rules, thinking...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I mean, our GM got so tired of the TPKs, he rush leveled us to 6th, and it didn't do much to improve our odds. Getting jumped by a phalanx of hobgoblin archers, it doesn't matter much. You're dead before you can take an action. The problem is, statistically, the monsters are better than you...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

For the system to work for me, I'd need to change the concept of damage. Like a 1 HD monster can't cause more than 1 HP of damage (perhaps 2 on a crit), which guarantees a wizard or thief can survive at least one hit. This is especially necessary to enjoy combat-focused dungeon crawls. A fighter...

So you're done with D&D but still want to play D&Dish fantasy...

Like D&D 5E and you want to remain compatible with your existing system, but you want more tactical depth and character options, try Level Up: Advanced 5e. (Or if you want to wait a bit longer, maybe look at DC 20.) Like D&D 5E and you don't care about compatibility with your existing system...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

First, a little about me. I came into the hobby in 1989 with AD&D 2nd edition. It seems that I'm one of the few "old timers" without a basis in B/X or BECMI. But I really enjoyed 2E and played it for a decade until 3E was released. After a few years of 3E, I started getting nostalgic for the...

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

Points taken! Thanks for all the input. It's definitely put my gripes into perspective. I think I'll just sit back and go with the flow. If the other players are unhappy, I'll let them speak up. The opportunity of playing in someone else's game was to give me a chance to take a break from...

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

We've taken a few weeks off the game due to scheduling issues, so we haven't returned to the campaign.
