    D&D General Best Adventure I Haven't Run?

I'm looking for a 5e adventure that meets the following criteria. If you have any ideas, please share them. Can be official or unofficial. Towards the "campaign" length (more Cure of Strahd than like a 32 page module). Available in print. Nothing too bleak/grimdark (doesn't have to be comical...

Who has been playing The Wildsea?

I played a one-shot of it for a podcast (which ended up turning into 3 episodes). It was a lot of fun and a very creative world. I didn't get to see how a lot of the rules interacted, but I'd play again.

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

The blaze of glory doesn't have to be killing the dragon. It could be a devastating strike that weakens the dragon to give the rest of the party a fighting chance. (Maybe swallowing the bodyguard temporarily suppresses its breath weapon?) Or the epic showdown keeps the dragon busy enough that...

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

You've never played in one of my games. ;) Yeah, I was wondering if there was another way to handle it? I was feeling inspired by Dragonbane and the Year Zero Engine games to attack the ability scores. I could permanently drain a Hit Die each time. If you're at 0 HD and go down - that's the...

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Fabula Ultima makes it impossible for a character to die without being in a pivotal scene with a major villain. If a character is defeated, the player decides to go out with a blaze of glory or to take a "campaign setback" (which is discussed with the GM.) Daggerheart uses a very similar method...

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

One struggle I've had as a GM is the pressure of building thrilling, challenging encounters that aren't too over-tuned that they risk TPKs at every turn. Invariably, it happens, and my campaign comes to a screeching halt. This isn't just "the occasional TPK" or "they made bad decisions." This is...

    Limited Run Systems

We have story, but there isn't a lot of interesting mechanics to the system. Much like Fabula Ultima, it really suffers from an anemic bestiary. I can see most combats turning "samey" with repeated enemy types. I run three players. It takes a lot of enemies just to get to a moderate challenge...

    Limited Run Systems

I was thinking recently about how certain systems come with a breadth of scope and how others don’t. For example, you can have a one-page system like “Lasers and Feelings” or “Honey Heist” and have a great time for one session, but you’re likely not going to have a 6-month campaign...

D&D General Has 5e become noise?

I feel ya. I've got more stuff than I can actually use. I forget what's in all the books. When I add extra resources, it just confuses things and slows the game. Nothing against the system, but Level Up broke 5e for me. Just too much. The only way the hobby survives for me is to ignore all the...

Pathfinder 2E Help. My thaumaturge is unimpressive

So I just reached what was considered "name level" in older editions. I have a 9th level thaumaturge, and the power upgrades were minimal, especially compared to other party members with 5th rank spells, etc. I got an ancestry feat that lets me Aid an extra character and a "big" class ability...

Fabula Ultima Hardback & Bestiary Vol. 1 Kickstarter

I backed just for add-ons of Natural Fantasy and the Bestiary - which are the only two books I don't have. I'm playing in a biweekly Fabula Ultima game. I love it and want to see the designers have a great success.

    What System(s) Should I Suggest?

Yes. I'm actually running Daggerheart with another group currently. I really like it. I'm concerned that it might go too narrative for this crowd - who are very much into counting squares, min-maxing, etc. I know one of the players brought up Lancer. I don't know much about that one.

    What System(s) Should I Suggest?

I guess just because it's "always" 4 - except when it's not. And then you're dividing by 4 to see how many successes you get - except when you're not. Not in this case. In 5E D&D, you just kinda get what you get. You're not getting step increases every session and choosing from a smorgasbord...

    What System(s) Should I Suggest?

It may be atypical, but my group struggled with... 1) Differing Target Numbers depending on the Parry value of enemies. 2) AP, Armor, Toughness, and conversion to Wounds. 3) Tracking Wound penalties. 4) Spending Advances to "level up" 5) Multiple action penalties

Critical Role Professor DM interviews Critical Role Cast

Well, the actual play of the company that designed the game to be specifically "the kind of game we want to play" while you know - not playing it. It doesn't encourage faith in the product.

    What System(s) Should I Suggest?

Well, it's been over a year weekly with the same campaign, same characters, etc. I think we're just wanting something a bit different. With other groups, it was a little hard to explain. But this is a different group, and a lot of the computations would be handled online. So possibly...

    What System(s) Should I Suggest?

My weekly group is planning to take a break from our Pathfinder 2E campaign that's been going on for over a year. (This is not the same group that I have consistently failed to run a satisfying game with.) There's a possibility that I could GM something. I'm trying to think of a system that...

Critical Role Professor DM interviews Critical Role Cast

I understand that I'm not the target audience. I don't watch Critical Role or other live plays. I did run a very entertaining session of Daggerheart for my group last night. I wish that the system could reach even more potential players.

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

From past examples, most of even WotC's official 4e modules are slogs of interesting combats. Paizo uses tiny maps inappropriate for tactical combat (consider Abomination Vaults' rooms that can't even house the monsters supposedly encountered in them.) If the two biggest RPG companies'...

Critical Role Professor DM interviews Critical Role Cast

I'm immensely disappointed that they went with 2024 D&D instead of Daggerheart. Seemed to completely stall the momentum of that system and relegated it to "fantasy heartbreaker" status overnight. Oh well. I'm running Daggerheat tonight while D&D 2024 was looked at once and put on my bookshelf.
