    Starfinder Player Core Review

You get a few examples of potential actions you could succeed at at different tiers of proficiency, but no numbers. To be fair, I just looked and it's not in the PF2 revised Player Core either. I never noticed it because I've had no reason to really look at PF2 core (my class isn't in it). I...

    Starfinder Player Core Review

I picked this up yesterday at my LGS. I'm sure the Pathfinder Core is probably presented in a similar way, but I miss not having DCs in the player's book. It says simply "the GM will tell you." I think many players of Pathfinder and Starfinder would like to know DCs in advance of taking...

Paizo Ends Pathfinder Adventure Path Softcovers, Switching to Quarterly Model

I'm somewhat disappointed that the new Starfinder Adventure Path (Guilt of the Grave World) covers levels 1-5. Like Princess Leia, I had to ask "aren't you a little short for an Adventure Path?"

Paizo Ends Pathfinder Adventure Path Softcovers, Switching to Quarterly Model

Hmmm. I'm struggling to find something negative to say about this change - and that's something coming from me.

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

You can watch the Professor DM video. He said the majority of events were 2014 (not 2024). He said that D&D had lots of tables that weren't full and some that were cancelled because no one signed up. Like, yes, absolutely! Absolutely D&D is the biggest RPG in the world. I was responding to a...

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

That's not what I've seen. From my angle, few are playing 2024 D&D (based on DND Beyond character numbers, GenCon events, and reported book sales). The 3D VTT that was going to be a cornerstone of the new revision proved to be DOA. Virtually every high profile employee at D&D is gone. It's...

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

Well, I'll still be playing Daggerheart even if they're not. Very disappointed though. Was kinda hoping for a sea change in the hobby where we could "maybe" start to branch out.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

We had a one-shot game of high-level Swords & Wizardry for an online convention. The writer of the adventure (who's generally speaking a good designer and very cool guy) ran it with some of the most outlandish pregens I've ever played in a con game. I specifically remember a warrior-type who...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

My most nostalgic period included a consistent group of my best friends. We were in college, so no real jobs or responsibilities. We could stay up late, eat junk food. We hung out all the time, even outside the game. We talked motivations, campaign worlds. Tragically, we lost one of our friends...

Right. I would give first casting for free. That way you could count on "critical" utility castings at least one time. Other than that, I dunno, maybe the system would play okay for my tastes, provided the group got in the right mindset and you ran or prepped a good adventure for the system.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

With the exception of my wife, I don't game with the others regularly. I also doubt my ability to run it well. Maybe, but she at least had hope that SD would be different by listening to interviews with Kelsey Dionne and watching a very fun live play at Origins '24 that she ran. She claims to...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I'll comment on the three games I played. Con Game 1: was designed and run through Lurking Fears. I think they're something of the official organized play because they work directly with Arcane Library. It wasn't a "bad"session. Just a mediocre dungeon hack with lots of monsters to fight. I...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

In my experience (and I think I've demonstrated plenty in this thread why it is atypical and full of bad takes), I think that exemplifying 40+ year-old adventures from the days of TSR has been a detriment to the OSR and Shadowdark. They don't play as well as we remember and may not convert as...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

So the Reaction Rolls are only for random encounters that aren't connected to the existing faction motivations, right? In the adventure, the salamanders (devoted to their leader) and duergar (magically enchanted) encountered on the random rolls have reasons to be hostile immediately.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Since I’ve been told I’ve been judging Arcane Library’s Shadowdark adventures unfairly, I’m doing a quick read through of “Fortress of the Burning Brothers,” from Cursed Scroll 2 and sharing my thoughts. There will be spoilers. This is obviously not a review, since I haven’t played it. I’m just...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Also - in the wisdom of that GM - he wanted to "skip to the good parts." This meant avoiding all the faction play on the upper tiers and just putting us in the dungeon, with no support from the factions, no knowledge of what was below, etc. He's a great friend, but he did a bad job with this one.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Yes. And this wasn't one of the convention games. It was being run by a GM who had been a player in my group going back to the AD&D 2E era. He has been running an ongoing Castles & Crusades campaign for about 2.5 years at this point. I don't know why he ran the encounters the way he did -...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Right, I found that OSE didn't match my expectations of old school play, but I was hopeful that another branch of the OSR might. Maybe (if anyone cares) I can explain what my nostalgia was, and maybe that will inform the disconnect I have with Shadowdark and other games. If nothing else, it...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I don't think I fully understood that until my string of bad sessions. I had a nostalgia for how I played old TSR D&D, but that's not what the OSR does. I'm guessing it's more in narrative games like Daggerheart. And honestly, those styles of play couldn't be more different. I have to say I've...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I think if they don't have a solid grounding, that you're going to have the experience I had at the convention. Maybe they watched a lot of YouTube videos and not read the books. But playing the game as written with the assumption of play it entails will lead to many character deaths. I don't...
