D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

The fiction matters FAR MORE than the mechanics. The mechanics needs to support the fiction, not the other way around.

    D&D 5E (2024) Subclasses

No, Thunderwave is once again an evocation according to the designer notes. If it’s listed accidentally as a transmutation somewhere, that’s a copy error. I ask again, where was Necromancer explicitly confirmed?

D&D 5E (2024) Always prepared spells for the Bard

So I would imagine the mythologically accurate Bard would be one of 10+ levels in the class.

D&D 5E (2024) Is there any confusion between Poison Damage and the Poisoned Condition?

Yup! As it is acid is being used for caustic alkalis too. Though I’ve always thought that bases should be Poison damage in dnd because our sense of bitter flavour was developed to avoid poisons of the Basic variety. But when it comes to the fiction of the chemical burn, yeah, D&D uses acid...

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

The fiction of dodge mobility includes High armored defense and features that turn hits into misses, but also perhaps a subclass feature that does damage reduction or provides THP representing “near hits”.

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

Mobility protects the group if you’re both dodiging the attacks and aggro-ing the enemy’s attention. Such things have and still exist in D&D - such as gaining Opportunity Attacks that punish enemies for targeting someone other than you. 5e should actively support this fiction in the class that...

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

Dodge-Tank is a thing. No, they don't want to get hit. Yes, they do want to be the subject of attention. It's the opposite sort of tank/defender from Fighter and Barbarian and Paladin who want to soak up blows and shrug it off due to massive defenses, damage reductions, and HP sponges. Dodge...

    D&D 5E (2024) Subclasses

Sure, but that would be more like a Bladesinger, Warmage, Chronurgist, Graviturgist, or Scribe - not a School Specialist Wizard but a cool Wizard-y concept subclass. The Spell School subclasses still need to be somewhere. At least Thunderwave is no longer a transmutation…

    D&D 5E (2024) Subclasses

Oh I'm sure it will, Oh, I'm sure it will, but I just feel like if anything Necromancer would be exiled to the DMG like Death Domain and Oathbreaker… And Transmuter was in Essentials Kit so it's what WotC considers "Subclass #2" for the class.

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer - What concepts are missing?

Botanist and/or Monster part resource user, Fleshweaver (Dr. Frankenstein), Swordmage/Armamentalist (Forge Adept is basically this, but it's also Keith Baker homebrew), Magitechnician/Engineer/Tinkerer, Physicist messing with the laws of reality (Dunamancy Artificer?), Mathematician/Geometer...

D&D 5E (2024) Is there any confusion between Poison Damage and the Poisoned Condition?

Yeah, I'm still confused by it. I wish Poison Damage was called like Toxin Damage. It's given to venomous things just as often as poisonous things.

D&D 5E (2024) Discipline Points or Focus Points?

How about calling them Power Points and return the Monk to being Psionic as it was in 4e? *edit: I've always thought of PP = Power Points, rather than Psi Points, due to Golden Sun using it for their Psynergetic Powers. Of course, in Japan, they're EP - Energy Points, and Psynergy is just...

D&D 5E (2024) Stone Goliath, Fire Goliath, Frost Goliath, Hill Goliath, Cloud Goliath, and Storm Goliath Lore

I had thought they were in MotM, but yeah, they're only in Icewind Dale thus far, so I'd place a good bet on reprinting them here, given that it's a sort of Rules Expansion type book while Icewind Dale is an adventure.

D&D General Extra Credits: The History of D&D Hasbro Refused to Learn

I turned the video off when it was clear they had a very anti-4e, pro-Pathfinder bias. No ill will toward Pathfinder, personally, though. Just didn't want to even engage in the complex feelings that come up from that sort of thing.

D&D 5E (2024) Stone Goliath, Fire Goliath, Frost Goliath, Hill Goliath, Cloud Goliath, and Storm Goliath Lore

I wish, and for Fomorians too, but neither of those are classical members of the Ordning. They got upgraded to MM1-level status in 4e due to synergy with the Shadowfell and Feywild, respectively. It's relatively easy to homebrew those variants, though!

    D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

It's not just that. The market was hosed, but they also hosed it in such a way that gave birth to oggles of competitors that they were hosing just to keep up with the output. 5e is more confident to peddle along with 3-7 releases a year (including special edition reprints, recompliations, etc)...

D&D 5E (2024) Stone Goliath, Fire Goliath, Frost Goliath, Hill Goliath, Cloud Goliath, and Storm Goliath Lore

The main reason I see 2 not panning out is that Planescape is a few months away now, and they may not have made the decision in time for the book to get it. There should have been enough time, but the way they talk about it in that video from a few months ago, it sounds like the Ardling if...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 5.11 - the time of big change is over

Regarding UA survey results and analysis: It’s worth rewatching this D&D Beyond official video from February explaining their analysis of the survey results and how they balance against broader interest: why the Ardling and Jump Action got cut, why Goliath is in, how they parse more than just...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 6: Bard

Fair. I think what I’d make these 2 spells count toward your spells prepared total (as opposed to other class/subclass feature freebies). I didn’t realise Lore Bard players lost their mind, though I also imagine that’s tied in with how restricted the Bard list was on Playtest Packet 2 to begin...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 6: Bard

Was just reading Brandes Stoddard's Bard breakdown over on Tribality, and it got me thinking: What if Magical Discoveries was baselined as a core class feature at like 3rd or 5th level, but you couldn't swap these 2 spells from other power sources out until 10th level when you have access to...
