    D&D General Orcs are misplaced

Settings either evolve with the player base or die from lack of use. Some evolve very slowly (but surely) due to a more niche audience, others swiftly due to a larger audience that shifts with the new blood coming into the fandom. Forgotten Realms was pushed by TSR as their Mainline, Header...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

The difference is actually that it's not a Spell-granting Feat. It could have granted a Fear-based Cantrip or 1st level spell with X-ASM-limited uses per LR with 1 restored after SR, but it went for doing something not emulated exactly by the Wizard or the Bard just with the right spell choice...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

Penalized is a strong term here. Both of those two backgrounds boost Wisdom, one of the Monks two most important ability scores. There is not reason the Monk can't take +2 Wis, and +1 to either Int, Con, or Cha (depending on either of these two backgrounds), and still play just as well. You do...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

Here's the great thing: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything still exists and this sort of customization is part of the 5e ruleset. Did it make it into the 2024 Revised Core Rules? No. Have they forgotten that the Rules Expansions still exist? No. In fact, these two FR books say in many places "as...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

While I agree that they could have provided more synergy in this one Origin Feat with the Background that triggers it, I actually think their 2-Feat Chains in the book go a long way to solving the problems with Subclasses kicking in at 3rd Level for classes where you'd have made your SC decision...

Critical Role Tell me the selling points of Tal'Dorei / Wildemount, without mentioning Critical Role, Matt Mercer, etc.

And yet -- it works well in the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide as a limited-scope setting gazetteer as opposed to justifying two whole books to cover just the Eurofantasy pastiche part of the setting (i.e., Forgotten Realms' new books). I still think that if not for the 50th anniversary, they...

D&D 5E (2024) Next issue of Game Informer will have details on the two upcoming Forgotten Realms books

I have the book and the map (both FR volumes were released by my FLGS on Tuesday earlier this week). It lacks Zakhara, Evermeet. etc. There's a compass in the SW corner so as not to cover up any landmassesl There are arrows on the west and south edges of the map that point to Evermeet...

New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

Or Drunken Fist Warrior. Tattooed Warrior shows that they don't need to use the "Warrior of X" phrasing like they awkwardly tried to back in 2014 version's "Way of X". But I don't think they should emphazise intoxication. Heck, this feels like how they decided to update the "Way of the Long...

    D&D General Kara Tur 5e

I'd rather they adapt Kamigawa with both Champions block and Neon Dynasty subsettings. But Oni's Right Hand suggests we'll get Kara-Tur first. Please please please WotC don't call it Oriental Adventures when it comes west (f it comes west!).

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I hope they rework the College of Whispers Bard for the Athasian Minstrel; maybe lean into Weapon Masteries or something to capture more of the Roguish/less magical flavour of the class. I also hope the Eladrin, Tiefling, Dragonborn, and Goliath lore carries over from 4e, as these were great...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

I don't agree with half of your ideas, and I'm mostly satisifed with 5e 2024, but I agree with the theory approach behind this. D&D's role amidst all other TTRPGs is the jack of trades. It has to make sacrifices of the specific to mold to the general. But to be able to dial up into various...

D&D General I finally like non-Tolkien species for PCs

Not quite this, but see Lorwyn-Shadowmoor (which will get an upcoming D&D setting booklet of some sort and is coming back to MTG next year). The setting is based on Celtic mythology elements and thus doesn't lack elves & dwarves and halflings, but it very specifically chose to omit Humans...

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

I was introduced to both early on by loving Rankin-Bass/Studio Topcraft (aka proto-Studio Ghibli)'s Flight of Dragons and their contemporary adaptations of both The Hobbit and The Return of the King (and The Last Unicorn to complete the quartet of these films, though that one is neither Tolkien...

Eberron: Forge of the Artificer Delayed Until December

Great point and I was completely forgetting this. I've played in quite a few pre-releases at my FLGS and I should have thought about that. I was reacting to the topic of cannabilization of Magic audience via MTGArena, but it's very true that physical is still required for MOST EDH/Commander play...

D&D's October Product Revealed to Be Stranger Things Tie-In

No spoilers please. I haven't seen the show yet, and others have already said as much as well.

Eberron: Forge of the Artificer Delayed Until December

This is in part because of vastly different monetization schemata for the two most profitable Hasbro IPs. They've tried to monetize D&D on a booster-pack model in the past - Fortune Cards and D&D Miniatures come to mind. But In 5e, randomized booster Miniatures are gone, because it's just too...

And now I've read the thread, and do not feel cheated. I am glad it was bought back.

D&D General Words which replaced "race" in fantasy games

The problem with that is that race is a social construct, and even in real life, species is a construct that does not actually fit the "cannot interbreed" clause. Many are species that "do not normally interbreed." And then you have Oaks, where all the White/Swamp White/Chestnut/Swamp...
