The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

Honestly, I've been discovering that the majority of content I create, while I published it as OGL, only some of it was really OGL, I never needed the license to sell most my wares, just particular ones. Most of what I do is custom not connected to the SRD in any way. I did it more as a...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

I never pay attention to trends, I'm an anti-trender, maybe that's why I'm so successful. Edit: I find trends to be mostly noise, sure it has some stats to back it up, but it's general information, not specific marketable data, only good for the masses. I look at the market differently, and...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

I'm not going out of business, in fact I'm growing and have been doing this for 15 years. I'm a one person company, though I publish for two authors besides myself, and have used contractors in the past, but I mostly do all the work myself. Nobody is driving me out of business. While it was 14...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

In the last 50 years or so where litigation becomes more and more a threat to small businesses, almost everybody is becoming an LLC just for the legal protections, but 50 years ago, almost every business was a partnership or sole proprietor, only larger concerns were corporations. Corporations...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

I don't see it as natural at all, just one way it can go. While there are many LLCs, the majority of businesses in the world are small family businesses, not what I consider the corporate environment. The truly big A type corporations are very few, but since they make all the money they get all...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

I'm not incorporated, I'm a sole proprietor. I got some Scottish blood in me, even some royal blood, but I'm no True Scotsman. ;)

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

It depends on how you pursue your art career, I suppose. I'm definitely not typical, but I was a freelance cartographer since 2008 for dozens and dozens of publishers in that time. I did one for Paizo, and a Call of Duty strategy guide, but most of my commisisons were with smaller companies. My...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

I don't disagree, but I consider Capitalism a separate system than what a corporation does, though the latter is derived from the former, it's a completely different inhuman animal, not capitalism at all, something altogether different, not in a good way. Corporations are entities owned by...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

Not out of the question, but my intuition tells me that isn't going to happen, not in my lifetime anyway.

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

Governments and economies don't exist in a vaccuum, and there are always nations/forces in opposition to other nations (since the beginning of human interaction). So the expectation of say a Soviet Union lasting a thousand years instead of 70. The US and it's corrupt intelligence agencies aren't...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

Maybe, but it's worked for me for over 35 years, and presumably for the next decade or so, until I'm fully retired, if I ever am. What worked last century and next century isn't really my concern, rather the now is what matters most to me. I've been an employee in the past, and not something I'd...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

Sure, geopolitics is complex and very imperfect, as every political and economic system - I'm no expert. But I'm confident that at least for now Capitalism is the form of economics that work best for me.

I don't disagree, so it would taken longer to fail, without CIA interference. I don't just look at 20th century examples though, I look at political systems across time, and take that into account in any declaration I make about it.

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

I'm a creator first, then a roleplayer, never been a wargamer. I've created an IP, and I intend to create more. I won't touch an IP that isn't mine. So corporations have no hold over me...

The Moral of the Story Is....Maybe there's such a thing as (D&D being) too big

Then you're welcome to ruin me forever. I've operated 2 small businesses, then operated as a freelance illustrator and cartographer, now a small RPG publisher. I wouldn't have done any of it for free, and I believe Capitalism is the only economic/governing system in existence - all others fail...

We had it as a Kickstarter goal for a Bestiary when we ran the Gamemaster's Guide/Player Guide for Kaidan KS, but we never funded a third book.

WotC What is the last WotC adventure you played in or DM'd?

Even when I still played 3.5 (I haven't touched D&D since as player/DM, am touching 5e now as a publisher) I only ran homebrew modules. So my answer is never - I have never ran a WotC adventure module in my entire life. I did run some TSR modules back in 1e/2e days, but I started homebrewing...

news scoop: insider account of how the statement was drafted, and the fear-based culture in Wizards offices

I'm guessing that I'd make anyone a terrible employee in the long run, being that I've been self-employed or operated my own businesses since 1988. The last time I was "managed" was from 83 - 87, while in the US Army. I can work well with other people, but I don't work well with "idiots" or...

D&D General D&D monsters and the myths they come from...

Being that I'm half Japanese, an amateur historian/folklorist, and somebody who was largely disappointed with Oriental Adventures, from back in the day - so many mistakes and/or concepts taken out of context, and the inaccuracies regarding Japanese monsters, I knew that someday I would try to...
