    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #4: "New Barbarian"

I agree that the wording on brutal strike is a bit confusing in that it is not clear whether you can make a reckless attack just for the extra damage die, while still gaining advantage from another source (e.g. faerie fire). If I was a DM, I would allow it, since you are still giving something...

Time travel doesn't exist because time travel wiped out the timelines where it did

This is my favourite sentence from the article: "In a new study, Andrew Jackson—a research associate from the School of Informatics—explores reasons beyond the scientific or technological as to why time travel appears to be impossible (at least, in this reality)." So...not science. Not really...

    Burger me!

I don't think it was ever an actual thing - I've never in my life seen or heard of anyone putting ketchup on iced cream. I suspect it was meant as a kind of parody, because Canadians do put ketchup on some things that Americans don't (most famously ketchup-flavoured potato chips, which I think...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

I think the fundamental issue here is a discomfort with players wanting different things than the DM does. I think it's a control issue. And I've felt it. When you do most of the work and have a certain vision, it's frustrating when you have to rely on others to bring it to fruition, and they...

What are you reading in 2025?

Finished the Hunger Games prequel, which took some time because I've been busy and the book is pointless. Collins is good at plot, so the action-oriented scenes were vaguely entertaining. The main issue is that there is literally no point - it's about how a narcissistic sociopath acted like a...

What Are Your Favourite Movie Quotes?

I think using words in a way that you know will be misinterpreted to mean a very specific thing ("your father is physically dead and another person, Darth Vader, killed him") is pretty much lying. The only conclusion Luke could have drawn was untrue. That's a lie. Using words that are...

    Spoilers Pluribus

It's still got my attention. I find Carol and the Hive Mind to be plenty interesting. And now I'm wondering about that South American guy.

    Do you observe Thanksgiving?

I thought Boxing Day was originally British? When I was a kid, it seemed like it was a thing in Canada but not in the US.

    Do you observe Thanksgiving?

Canadian Thanksgiving has a lot less cultural baggage than American Thanksgiving. It’s basically a family gathering time. There’s nothing about the pilgrims (obviously) or the nations founding, there’s no Black Friday, there isn’t chaos at airports, there isn’t even football, or at least not...

Natural 20/1 Crit fails and Crit successes, How do you handle them?

I’ve kept 1s as auto-fails because I have found that spectacular failures often produce spectacular story moments. At worst they add a new challenge for the party to figure out.

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

Hold on a moment. You’re now painting yourself as the victim, but this is what you originally wrote: In your original description, people are calling you names after you insult their preferred style of play. I dunno. This whole issue seems kind of made up. I don’t think there’s a rash of...

    Burger me!

Pineapple on a burger is not uncommon in these parts, but Canadians like pineapple on a lot of stuff that Americans find strange. It's a wierd cultural quirk. Ham and pineapple pizza is delicious, but I don't much care for it on my own burgers. But I'll do avocado or guacamole all day long.

That joke would only work in a few places and this is one of them. Well done!

    D&D 5E (2024) Ditching the Treasure Treadmill

At low levels treasure is fun because players are saving up for stuff and making choices. At higher levels, I am finding it more challenging to come up with gold sinks (though the airship they are trying to build should suffice for now). So yeah, at a certain point managing the inflation becomes...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

Your character generation process isn't how I do it, but it seems reasonable. So I'm having trouble squaring it with people getting angry and calling you names. I feel like I'm missing something. If your process involves that much conflict, it strikes me that there's somethng wrong.

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

But your fanfic is okay? Your tone sounds very antagonistic towards players who dare to have a backstory. Maybe that is what garners the angry responses? And are these total strangers, or are these your friends? If the latter, then that seems like a serious problem. If the former, then how did...

    Burger me!

NO!!! And it has to be on a bun, and you have to be able to eat it with your hands. These are non-negotiable for me.

I agree: isn't the whole point of the adventuring party that they are all exceptional? Drizz't was the only good Drow, etc.

Project Hail Mary | Official Trailer 2

The novel is fun, but more character driven than The Martian. Which is a problem, because Weir is a pretty limited writer in that regard, by his own admission. On the other hand, Gosling is a phenomenal character actor, so I am hopeful that he can elevate the material.

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

Fair enough. I've never encountered that sentiment, myself. Generally, I find players are very happy that someone else has done the work and are more than happy to work with the DM...when they even bother coming up with a substantial backstory at all. And then there are those occasional players...
