    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Yes, that's true - but it's not because of the rarity of knowledge, but by the rarity of the power needed by the individual to accomplish the task. It leans into the idea of a pre-industrial Master Craftsman laboring over a masterpiece versus someone going on an archeology hunt for old magic...

    D&D 5E (2024) Let's Write A High Level Adventure

An idea from a visual novel video game I recently played: Recently, the God of Death has had a soul-shaking experience that has left them now longer willing to cull the living. This manifests during the party's next encounter (which should start out as fairly minor), when after reducing foes...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Nah, though that's a bit of "lost knowledge" in Greyhawk lore with the fall of the Suelese empire (and FR with Netheril?). Old D&D just had a requirement you had to be 9th level or better (name level) to start creating magical items - starting with potions and getting access to creating more...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

I don't think a new setting needs to be something to push 5.5 exclusively - it would be fine if it could be adapted to other, older editions as well. To me, the draw would be that it's new. It's not a rehash but a new world we haven't seen before that isn't an attempt to skew a MtG's 5-color...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

I could go for a 1600's or so setting, perhaps along the lines of 7th sea (without the direct faux european countries), with muskets, advanced alchemy, rudimentary steampunk and the beginnings of technomagic.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

I think TSR was at its best when it was making campaign worlds - many are still beloved today. WotC seems to have handed that off to the 3PP, but I'd really like to see a handful of new worlds come out. I'm fine with one-and-done releases of a campaign world (though revisiting and expanding is...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Or decouple saves from ability scores altogether and put them at fixed values, possibly by class and level - more akin to 1E/2E. Just be less arbitrary with the save names (I'd be comfortable with using Fort, Reflex, Will and have spells target one of the three).

    D&D General 'Playing D&D' (Without Playing D&D)

Had to make a small change to mine - Worldbuilding has become front and center; I have a dozen journals I've bought in the last couple of years and am slowly working through them, building a new world in each. I'm up to 7 now (Dragons Must Die, Scions of Sckalmandra, Traders of Mabib, Blood...

    D&D 5E (2024) Let's Write A High Level Adventure

Could certainly pull in some ideas from the recent Alien: Earth for this.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

With the lead time on design, I'd say look at what was popular/going on about 12-18 months back from when any D&D product comes out - that was probably when the project was green-lit. I don't keep up with Fallout (only ever played a bit of Fallout 3), but it seems like that would more likely...

    D&D General A Setting! A Setting!

The Drain Rift also brings up an interesting point - trash disposal. Any ideas? <Edit> Also, disposal of the dead.

    D&D 5E (2024) Let's Write A High Level Adventure

It'd probably look like the Bloodstone Land adventures.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Been looking through my (electronic) copies of Dragon, trying to find an article related to the above. I remember it's one of them, talking about Athas possibly being the far future version of one of TSR's campaigns (I was thinking Greyhawk, but perhaps FR). It was among a couple articles of...

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

I've used it to drive the singular actions of my characters sometimes, but always with the knowledge that D&D is a group game, and the group only survives when it's coherent. So, stuff like betraying the party, stealing from party members and the like are right out. Rivalrlies - like the one...

D&D 5E (2024) Help Me Fill Out a Treasure Hoard

I seem to recall one of the Hoard of Tiamat/Tyranny of Dragon books having a fabulous picture of Tiamat standing amid her hoard, but I forget where I saw it. This, unfortunately, was the highest res I could find: One thing I do remember about the picture is the gold statues - perhaps...

Also, the noble families of Cynelsa being half-elf. Not in they directly have one human/one elf parent, but that within the last few generations (3?) having an elvin or sylvan descendant. There is enough intermixing of half-elvin blood that the nobility counts back as far as 6 generations of...

    D&D General A Setting! A Setting!

"hybridizing orchids" ... hmm, stirs thoughts on a different line... The use of Awaken on plants over the ages has brought into being a race of sentient plants known as the Forestborn. These humanoid plants have gathered into a subcommunity within Greenworth, and they are the ones who have...

RPG Evolution: Nothing Goes to Waste

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

An in-built race/species/background improvement or unlocked ability at 3rd, 5th, 10th and 15th would be appreciated. Especially if they weren't combat-focused.
