D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

What if Hiregaard was a devoted historian, and his curse is that every time he comes out of one of his episodes, the entire history of the kingdom has changed?

D&D 5E (2014) Tasha's Drow Art and the Future of Their Depictions in D&D

Keep in mind that Middle Ages Norse people are not the same as the people who wrote the ancient legends and sagas. International travel didn't always exist.

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

The problem, I suspect, is that this isn't an adaptation or an update - it's a company altering it's Intellectual Property to sell better in the modern day. It's a soft reboot. It might just be an inescapable result of corporate control of art.

    D&D 5E (2014) I'd really, really like to hear about some fights with Strahd . . !

If that's the way you want to go, I'd suggest limiting how often he can use the ability rather than altering it. Once per short rest would be the obvious choice, but something less predictable might be an option.

    D&D 5E (2014) I'd really, really like to hear about some fights with Strahd . . !

The design intent of the module is to keep the party from beating him unless they fight him in the one place he won't retreat, as determined by the Tarokka reading. So in practice, the "passwall" ability is the one thing that keeps the party from curb-stomping him.

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

I wonder if this is more because these pre-millenial writers didn't write female characters well, or because they were too-closely imitating gothic period writers who didn't write female characters well?

D&D 5E (2014) If You Want A Different Flavor of D&D, Try Some Dragon Stew

How are the rule mechanics for the cooking contests? Are they sufficiently crunchy or more abstract?
  8. Savage Wombat

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

The module doesn't make this clear, but the intent is to have the party stumble arount Ten-Towns looking for the bad guy, but not find him until they've done another quest or two. My party was 3rd when they caught him and the fight was short.

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

We discussed this after CoS - one of my PCs intended to stay and rule Barovia after Strahd's demise. I told him that, inevitably, he or his heirs would be corrupted by the darkness and become a wicked tyrant. And a couple of generations from now, a brave young hero would engage in a quest to...

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

Well, in theory, one could use the new material by combining it with the Arthaus maps. Depending on how much they changed the domains, of course.

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

Dementlieu didn't have the strongest focus in the original books, which I felt actually made it better as a campaign region. You could live there and not really grasp the depths of the darkness around you.

Goodman Games' Next Reincarnation Is Expedition To The Barrier Peaks

I have it, but haven't run it. I don't know how challenging it would be for a 10th level party - I was honestly thinking of starting at 8th. 5th ed. PCs are quite durable. Also, some of the new content is potentially a lot of fun.

    D&D 5E (2014) Use for Darkness

Or open it when you're fighting an invisible foe. Levels the playing field - neither of you have advantage or disadvantage any more.

D&D 5E (2014) Which favored enemy and languages for Rime of Frostmaiden?

Honestly, I don't think it matters. No one language or creature is going to dominate the adventure in any particular way.

D&D 5E (2014) CoS: Running Strahd without relying on Charm

My party fought Strahd on the Overlook - try grappling a PC and throwing them off the edge. I wasn't feeling sadistic and did it to a character who could fly - you, of course, don't have to do that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tasha’s cauldron character thread

One of my players is running a tiefling Twilight cleric when we start Icewind Dale on Wednesday. I might have a Rune Knight but he hasn't committed yet.

D&D 5E (2014) How Would You Do This Concept?

In case you haven't heard of it: Slaver Sunflower

D&D 5E (2014) Aberrant Mind's Psionic Sorcery is officially the most powerful feature.

I do find it strange that Tasha's suddenly gives sorcerers the bonus spells they should have been getting ever since the Storm Sorcerer saw print and didn't have them (even though it was in the playtest).

D&D General What day(s) or night(s) do you run/play your games?

Wednesday night has been D&D night for about 30 years now. I used to have other regular games, but now I am old.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tasha's Group Patrons Preview

I don't understand why WotC is so convinced that, before now, no one ever considered that the PCs might work for someone else. I suspect they're trying to give DMs more tools to get players to follow the plot railroad. But maybe I'm just cynical today.
