    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

i do not think playing any species should require taking an origin feat to do so.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

i was thinking more in a sense of the half-elf('14 version because '24 deleted them) way where they get a bit of both worlds mechanically, the dwarven aasimar might end up with dwarven toughness and stonecunning as well as celestial resistance and celestial revelation, rather than just saying...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

given those species and similar kinds tend not to specify they're actually limited to human parentage, how many people would rather tieflings and such were actually implemented as more of an applicable template or 'substitute subspecies' than an independent species statblock? so you could end up...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

they could at least manage it for all the PHB options which they claim are the 'most common species', that's the point here, no, not every species needs to have a history in the setting but they could at least manage it for the ones they claim are the ones that make up the standard population.

    Why do we need thieves??

my point was the fighter, mage and thief are all specialists in their own separate areas, not that just the thief was a specialist. it's more an archetype thing IMO, it's an extension of having the 'smart guy' who thinks their way through problems but is often less capable in a fight due to...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Edit: they're doing that because the PHB species are meant to be the 'common' ones, grungs and leonin communities can take a backseat until the baseline options actually have establishment in the setting first what if i want to be from the sword coast? it's difficult because there's no...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

yes it's a trope, but my point was more in people using the 'adventurer misfit' mindset to justify throwing reason to the wind and creating whatever without trying for a deeper reason than 'they're an adventurer, they can thus be as weird as i like', movies and other structured media at least...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

yeah, rereading the OP it sounds more like their issue arises when the characters seem to lack connection to the world and civilization they exist in, when the entire party seems to of originated from 'over the horizon'

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

honestly, the 'they're adventurer's, they're already oddballs by the fact they choose to walk into life-threatening danger every day as their dayjob, and this justifies their license to be the most statistically bizarre collection of individuals possible' line of thinking rubs me the wrong way...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

if you have an issue with circus troupe parties, how much better do you find it when the troupe is an accurate sample of the setting's populations? like, if the world is filled with harengon, firbolgs, genasi, autognomes and centaurs as the majority of population, does that take the edge off the...

this does however presume a degree of willingness to abandon whatever the existing plot/setup was going to be (or to of not had any in the first place i guess)

    Why do we need thieves??

i'm not saying other classes shouldn't have competent skill access, it sounds like the 3e fighter was underfunded in it's skill access, i'm just saying that the role of the 'thief' class has traditionally often been the one to excel in both competency and breadth in their access of a system's...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

in a built for 5e setting, i feel like most major settlements ought be populated by at minimum three different species,

    Why do we need thieves??

although i've been referring to the class as the thief i'm more referring to them as their role as that 'high-skill class' you're mentioning,

    Why do we need thieves??

yes, a fighter or mage could use skills, but in the same way that a fighter of thief could learn to use magic or a thief or mage could become strong combatants, they could do that but they wouldn't be as good as the other class, the point is they're specialists, a greater portion of their kit is...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

If there were rules written to screw casters about as much as fumble rules screw the martials I’d expect them to say something like ‘whenever you cast a spell above 1st roll a d20 no modifiers, for every spell level above 1st there’s a cumulative 5% chance your spell explodes in your face for...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Except they’re not doing that, because there isn’t a ‘wings’ or ‘gills’ cantrip and it is never even vaguely insinuated they’re altering their bodies with magic, they fly and breathe water respectively by having physical adaptations they are born with, expecting a species to constantly be...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

honestly the main elf subspecies probably do make more sense as cultures than subspecies, then for actual subspecies you could go with a land-sea-sky dynamic with eladrin(maybe they also get to steal +5ft from wood elves), sea elves and winged elves.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

i think it lines up fairly well with the theme of the conversation, a better point of what i said besides pointing out the double standard is that yes you could do it, and you could find a justification to make it 'realistic', but would that be a fun thing to do? and the answer for the majority...
