Not me specifically. I was using those as examples. Middle Earth though doesn't have it's protagonists casting fireball, dimension door or teleporting. Gandalf doesn't cast Wish or similar. The power level as it were doesn't work. Although this assumes you still use all 20 levels or close enough.

For me it's inability to represent differing settings. Right now and for some time too, D&D has felt like a powered up computer game - World of Warcraft or League of Legends. Using the D&D system as is doesn't fit settings like Conan or Middle Earth. A minor niggle but something that I think D&D...

I remember when D&D had alignment languages. If you were Lawful, for instance, you knew Lawful and could talk to any Lawful creature because of it. That was basic D&D I believe but I think (It has 35 years...) that alignment languages were in 1st edition AD&D as well. No one ever used them...

I don't think anyone will be happy with the opposing points of view in this thread. What if we said that demons don't have gender but instead exist with a traditional gendered appearance? That's why the Marilith has always appeared female in physical form and subsequently art.

Probably because I wanted to boost my combat effectiveness if I'm not a dedicated martial character already. Really it is no different than under 3rd edition where everyone and their brother took a level of Rogue just to get skill points, sneak attack and evasion.

There are so many still missing that to me are part of the classic D&D. Some that I am missing coming back to D&D with 2024 are: Eye of the Deep. Lurker Above/Lurker Below. Vodyanoi. Pyro/Cryo-Hydra. Gem Dragons. Para and Quasi Elementals. Gorbel. Quicklings. And really I want to see templates...

My homebrew world has an artifice based realm (Think Piltover from Arcane/LoL) so this will fit perfect for there. I'll ignore the Eberron specific requirements as it gives more options for the players.

D&D is a brand name that a lot people outside of the hobby know of. They probably won't know Pathfinder ..etc. In the past I used to say "like D&D" if playing something else.
