Other D&D Variant What is your favorite version of D&D offshoot/D20 fantasy today? Tell us why it is the best!

Some of these are not variants of D&D. Draw Steel and Daggerheart aren't; they aren't even d20 systems--they don't use d20s for their core mechanics! I feel it diminishes them to call them d20 or D&D variants. I'm not familiar enough with some of the others to say whether they are.

How long before VTTs support TTRPGs with AI GMs?

Don't worry. There will always be people who want to make and play TTRPGs.

How long before VTTs support TTRPGs with AI GMs?

I imagine that at the point TTRPG publishers become video game publishers, new markets for TTRPGs will become apparent. At the point where you're logging onto a VTT to play game run by an AI, you're playing a co-operative video game. Folks have video games already. And future BG3 type games...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

On that note (while recognising my own complicity) let’s please avoid turning this into Yet Another AI Thread Where One Person Stans It For Pages While Everyone Argues With Them. We’ve had enough of those and we all know how it will go, word for word. Let’s get back to the actual thread topic...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Incorrect. Have a look at YouTube or the Amazon Kindle section sometime. It’s all slop. Fake trailer slop. Fake look-a-like book slop. Crappy incorrect search result summaries. This is now, not a year ago.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Incorrect. AI slop is an excellent way to describe the massive onslaught of low quality plagiarised crap filling YouTube, Kindle, search results, and, unfortunately, RPG books. It is slop in every sense of the word. Maybe AI will one day end up with ethical and good quality uses. Right now...

    Million Dollar TTRPG Kickstarter Club

Funding goals don’t mean much. They’re just an arbitrary number chosen by the publisher. Usually they’re committed to making the product long before the crowdfunder starts and the funding goal is just a marketing tool to message success early. Often they are set artificially low to achieve that.

    Spoilers Alien: Earth Spoiler Thread

Well, it’s important when you’re making a show, because it informs what happens in your show.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Slightly? I’d dispute that. There are thousands of rules light games released every year… and maybe a handful of heavy games. Just look at marketplaces like itch.io. The market is very, very heavily in favour of rules light games, for many of the reasons—both from the publishing and the customer...

D&D General Stop Yapping, Start Playing: Trimming GM Descriptions

I use comparisons a lot. You approach the house--think Wayne Manor. Everybody will imagine it slightly differently, but that's OK. That happens with novels, too. The small details don't really matter; they'll fill in the carpets and flowers and paintings themselves. You just have to mention...

According to their website, it was a single donor, and the bulk of that donation was returned in 2022 after various setbacks. https://www.gygaxmemorialfund.org/news-project/2025/9/24/the-adventure-begins-kickstarter-to-begin-on-october-1st-2025

I thought that's what I said. Thanks for the pep talk, but don't worry. It's my full time job. I have a salary. :)

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Having published both light and crunchy games, I’d also venture that rules heavy games are difficult to make (in terms of effort, not cleverness). I’ve personally written and published multiple light and heavy games, and the latter are very challenging. The light games I’ve produced were much...

D&D General They're Building A Memorial Game Table Sculpture In Honor of Gary Gygax

I’m not too clear who is running the campaign. I know Gail Gygax was involved with founding it, presumably 15 years ago, and @Paul J. Stormberg wrote the adventure and posted about the campaign here—Paul can you shed some light on who’s involved?
