D&D General Has online play changed your DM style?

Yes, absolutely. I no longer spend huge amounts of time drawing shoddy imitations of maps on dry-erase boards. I now have beautiful maps that are revealed as I need and each player can only see what their character would see. Other than that, all my changes in style are related to becoming a...

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation campaign recaps

These things happen. As long as you tell the players you stuffed up and that you'll play it by the rules from now on, then it won't matter. If you let them keep on doing it then it might break the game.

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation campaign recaps

It can be awkward as the characters can suddenly bounce from one place to somewhere quite far away and some of those puzzles are difficult to hold in your head as a DM. However I'm managing it OK when they do go somewhere unexpected although I may go off script a little from time to time. The...

Session 36 - Day 117 (3pm - 7pm): Wading and squeezing: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/7667265/day-117-3pm-7pm-wading-and-squeezing Not the best session last week - a wee bit of frustration at not being able to figure out puzzles. The crawlspaces could pose a problem for my group, I have a...

TSR Elf Stranded on the Warden: A Short Gary Gygax Story

I've done that in a campaign, but it was pre-arranged. My friend, Jeremy, was DMing a high level game where the players had decided they had to planar shift from Mysterra (sp?) to Greyhawk to find the McGuffin. I had been DMing a different game in Greyhawk at the time. When they teleported...

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation campaign recaps

It feels a lot more deadly and my players live in constant fear, but they are really enjoying it. They know that death can strike quickly and that ups the stakes. I have found that this module ramps up the stakes all through the campaign so that by the time they got to the tomb they are ready...

Room 35. That trap is deadly.

Session 35- It's a Trap: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/7644219/day-117-1pm-3pm-its-a-trap One PC death, and a new character rolled up on the spot to replace him. The charactermancer is great.

TPK? Totally possible in there. One of your party transformed to a Yuan-Ti? Hmmm. Waiting with bated breath.

Awesome session. I love it when it comes down to a single dice roll.

    D&D 5E (2014) Languages most used?

Depends on the campaign. In this one it is Common, Chultan, old Omuan and Elvish. In my last D&D one it was Common and Goblin.

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation campaign recaps

Latest journal entry here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/7591458/day-117-burp-too-much-wine I had to change history a little and rewrite the end of the previous session, as the player who is Trayzeal was running very late. I didn't want a PvP session without the protagonist there. So...

    D&D General Wax Lemon?

Urgh, I remember that module. It would be the only one I would consider that I failed to run a fun or engaging game in. I remember I had an action-oriented group, so this module just simply fell flat.

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation campaign recaps

I'm looking forward to hearing how that goes. More than any other place in ToA, I feel this has the potential to go anywhere depending on player actions and DM decisions.

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation campaign recaps

Here is the journal entry from the last game. I skipped over the giant fight at the start as it's more interesting to play than to report or remember, and my memory is a bit dodgy as it's a week since we played. In this session the group encounter an aboleth, which takes control of the mind of...

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation campaign recaps

To be fair, since they were behind a door I ruled that the blast would do quarter damage. They both made their dex saves, so one took half damage from that (which almost killed him) and the other had evasion so took no damage.

How long does it take to generally take to set a campaign up

4 young kids here, full time work and evening work once or twice a week. I only use official published adventures now, and roll20 for maps and so remote people can play too. I read the book thoroughly, then get players to roll characters. I find hooks for each character for personal stuff in the...
