    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Total hyperbole. I strongly suspect that no-one is going to be forced in taking specific backgrounds. Yes, some backgrounds might be slightly suboptimal compared to others. I won't care if the background fits my character concept. I can only state for sure that this won't worry me in the least...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

One of the players in my game has a character who is blind because it fitted his concept. I'm never going to care what background they pick, as long as they are happy with it.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Wow dude. The whole way through this thread you have stated that almost nobody will like these changes. Despite many people disagreeing, you continue to think that you are right and anyone who disagrees is wrong. You are totally entitled not to like the changes. I do like them and judging by the...

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

It was a particularly difficult battle for me because I was juggling so many NPCs and monsters.

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

A good session last night. Into the room with the broken table. One of the characters plays a blind fighter with the blind fighting feat. He entered the room and I had the scene play out for him and only for him. The others saw an empty room, he saw a room teeming with battling dwarves and mind...

D&D General Tangent from Vecna - How Many Actually Good Adventures Are There?

The top official adventures I have run that I would consider top class as they are: Tomb of Annihilation (5E) Lost Mines of Phandelver (5e) Seekers of the Ashen Crown (4e) Red Hand of Doom (3E) Desert of Desolation (1e) - but that might be nostalgia. Castle Amber (1e) - but that might be...

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

And another session done. They didn't get far through Talhundereth as they got into big coversations with the medusa regarding art before trying to leave. One character failed the petrification save twice and we thought he was a gonner until another player remembered that you can gift...

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

Latest update: The group returned from Zorzula's Rest only to find many weird things going on in the town. Encephalon Gemmules, mutated cows, fungus with scales and people in extreme moods. They decided to evacuate the town, convincing Townmaster Harbin to lead the evacuation and cojoling or...

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

I wonder if it only feels less than it should be for DMs. I had that feeling too, but my players are loving it. Gaming again tonight after two weeks away and the weirdness has arrived at Phandalin.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle randomly rolling for stats

Ah. That was a good book, but there was some stuff from there that was wonky. That said, 1st edition was wonky throughout. That was part of the fun of it.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle randomly rolling for stats

Wow. Not a method I ever would have allowed unless I was really wanting a super-powered campaign. I don't remember that at all from 1e. Was it in a later supplement?

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle randomly rolling for stats

In AD&D I followed the recommended method. 3d6 in order before deciding what class you were eligible to be. I almost always rolled 18/00 for strength when I was thinking that I'd like to be a fighter though. Amazing coincidence.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle randomly rolling for stats

I give the choice of array or (4d6, lose lowest dice) x6. If you roll then you keep the results NO MATTER WHAT. This led to a dwarf warrior with a dex of 6. Hilarious accidents happened to him all the time yet he somehow survived the campaign. The low score added a heap of fun to the game as he...

D&D General "Player Skill" versus DM Ingenuity as a playstyle.

My style of DMing has not really changed much since 1980. I set challenges and hope that the players come up with something to solve them. Sometimes I don't know the answer myself, but the players invariably come up with something. I don't do puzzles so much as problems.

D&D General Vecna, Eve of Ruin - play reports.

I'm looking forward to starting this when I finish the Shattered Obelisk. I'd like to (if it is possible) to allow the players to choose any previous (still living) character from any previous campaign. I can do some backstory of them discovering secrets that then leads through to the main...

    D&D 5E (2014) Long time players and 5e’s success

Why is D&D in the popular culture now? Because it is Gen X gamers who are the writers, directors, and developers of popular culture. Without the older demographic loving D&D, the potential players would never have even known that the game exists.

D&D General Tell me about your crime campaigns.

I ran a Boromir Clan campaign set in Sharn, in Eberron. So they were working for a crime syndicate based at a casino. It was surprising how easily DMs Guide modules fitted into that because the objectives of a crime syndicate are not far different than normal murder-hobo objectives.

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

I checked in with the group. They are loving it. There is one who is not enjoying the body horror, but the others are. So I have cut out the transformations for that player. Everyone is very much enjoying the campaign. They have just worked out that there may be mind flayers involved and that is...

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

A few more sessions have passed by now. The group have just finished Zorzula's rest. The fun part of that was the mine tracks where the group got some of the carts mechanisms operating and then broke them while fighting the auger. That led to the carts speeding through the mines and picking up...
