    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

Read the 2024 DMG, the two examples I gave you are the ONLY options offered for a player that misses a session if the player does not want anyone else playing their character. If I am playing at your table and say I am going to miss a session and I do not want anyone else playing my PC, these...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

Since I edited my post, presumably after you replied I will post again here. You can homebrew whatever you want, but this is what the DMG says on this topic: "Fading into the Background. Have the character simply fade into the background. This requires everyone to step out of the game world a...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

But what if there is not random encounters? The last time I played and adventure with random encounters was probably around 2010. If the party is sleeping in the dungeon then presumably I can too. If the party is not then I am not either and I will meet up with them when I am back regardless...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Why isn't it? You Ready a spell and you choose a trigger to release the energy. "release the energy" is the action you use with your reaction; if you choose to when the trigger occurs, and not if you don't choose to when the trigger occurs or if the trigger doesn't occur before your next...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

Yes, and this is a 2024 forum. If you don't know the rules ..... So I guess it would be fine if the player said at the end of the session he was in said "I'm going to hang out over here while you go through some of the other rooms in the dungeon" or if he said in the middle of a city...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Like I said many times now, over and over again, the action is "release the energy" I've told you this before. Why do you keep saying I am trying to Ready Ready? I am not. I am Readying a spell and as per the description the action you take in response to the trigger is to "release the...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

As I alluded to it makes a lot more sense than using topple against an Elephant ... let alone a Dragon. Those things, and many, many more are a much bigger "break from reality" than not knowing where Mike went for a while.

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

Yep no problem at all IME ... and I have played Undermountain and had this very thing happen with my Paladin/Warlock. Pretty much everyone at the table understands it.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I get what you are saying, but several of them would not function right if you waited until the energy is released. In specific, Battle Magic would be significantly changed. Expert Divination and Free Casting make the most sense to implement when you spend the slot (which is on your turn).

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

That is not the way I interpret it. I interpret "release the energy" to be the mechanical effect that takes place and the rest of the spell is part of the cast "as normal". I agree .... I think .... you can't counterspell someone who Ready a spell unless you can see them when they do it (and...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

I am saying a colleague/ally/friend being right next to you one minute and not with your group the next is not any more immersion breaking than anything else in the game and in terms of "suspension of disbelief" it is a whole lot easier to accept than some of the things both people and enemies...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

Picked up right where we left off, literally in a Dungeon (actually the basement of a warehouse connected by secret underground tunnels to other areas under the city and infested with cultists).

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

When you cast it, because an opponent needs to see you cast it with VSM and you only cast it when you take the Ready action. Yes, as long as you do not need to see the target. For example, you can be around the corner and Ready fireball in this fashion, jump out, release the energy using your...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Actually nothing at all in the text implies you take the Magic action at all when you Ready a spell or that you take a second action at the same time you Ready any action. Moreover, then we go back to this: From the PHB: "Then, you choose the action you will take in response to that trigger"...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

Yeah, because Mind Flayers that can hurl psychic energy at you make so much more sense then an ally/friend just not being with you all the time. Like I said when I first started playing a lot of 5E I worried about this like you do now. But once you try it, it doesn't even come close to the...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

For these particular secret doors it is Investigation because it is impossible to notice them. I don't know about the other PCs but I have a +2 Perception (+3 prof, -1 ability).

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

What is the complication? The Rogue was here a minute ago (when we fiinished the session IRL a week ago) and he isn't now (when we started IRL today). Maybe he wondered off, maybe his God teleported him up to heaven for a 1-on-1, maybe he is hiding from us (he has a great stealth). Who cares...

I get, but this character was point buy and started out with one 17, one 15, one 14, one 12 and two 8s. So she did not min-max a whole lot. BLASPHEMY! You might as well tell me to give up a kidney or my first born.:p

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

You earlier claimed that "release the energy" which is what is readied in response to the trigger "finished" the Magic action. Meaning the action is not "finished" if that does not happen. Read the Rules! This is absolutely 100% not true. The text clearly says you "cast the spell" when you...
