D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I think you are missing the point. You Ready the move. Sure it isn't something you normally have on your turn, just like an AOO is not something you have on your turn. You take the ready action, which means you forgo other actions and then can move in response to the trigger.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Free interaction and use an object are not the verbiage in 2024, it is interact and Utilize. According to the text "you interact with an object while doing something else" and this is what I think pulling a lever would typically be, interacting just like opening a door or climbing down a...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

According to the rules you can not take more than one action on your turn. This is strongly implied in the section labeled "one thing at a time" and explicitly stated in the section in combat labeled "your turn": "On your turn, you can move a distance up to your Speed and take one action. You...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

You "release the energy" as a reaction. That is clearly spelled out under Ready action. "Realese the energy" is not one of the games main actions, just like in the examples given by WOTC "pull a lever" and "move" are not one of the games main actions but are done as a reaction.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

None. Just if you "pull the lever" or "move" in the examples WOTC gives in the text. It is not required that you must use one of the games "main actions" when you Ready an action. If you use Ready a spell you do not use one of the games defined actions with your reaction when the trigger...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

They are not talking only about a "proper action" as you like to call it, they are talking about what you are doing. Further they give two examples right below that which make this clear: Examples include “If the cultist steps on the trapdoor, I’ll pull the lever that opens it,” and “If the...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

No they don't When you you ready the Magic action you take the Magic action as a reaction. Now if you want to get technical, RAW you could Ready the Magic action for after the Cleric casts heal on you. I take the Ready action to use my Mace of Terror after the Cleric Heals me (use the Ready...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

No all of those require the Magic action. You ready the Magic action you take it as your reaction. When you Ready a spell you use different and specific rules that only apply to Readying a spell and you do not use the Magic action. As a matter of fact the reason it says "can't cast spells" is...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I am saying that yes. Ready a spell is specific and different from the normal use of the Ready action.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

They had spells for 3 levels by the time they became an actual Ranger. As a Scout, Strider etc they did not have spells.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Maybe so, but I think the public asked for more magic in the playtest as they gave both Paladin and Ranger more magic including spells right out of the gate at level 1 (and the Ranger more spells to cast per day at level 1 than any other class). When it comes to the number of spells a day you...

I am talking about the setting and the official printed material supporting it.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

That post you quoted was not about the classes it was about the setting. 1E D&D was very high magic, more so than modern D&D.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

In 2024 it does: "Thanks to their connection with nature, Rangers can also cast spells that harness primal powers of the wilderness. A Ranger’s talents and magic are honed with deadly focus to protect the world from the ravages of monsters and tyrants." That narrative very clearly features...

But it is largely the same for Gandalf in LOTR.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

In modern D&D the overwhelming majority of PCs cast spells of some sort whether from their classes or somewhere else and in the rare event where a PC actually can cast no spells at all they still are almost always magical in some other way. So I would argue it largely already is this way in...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I think it is wrong to conflate being magical and casting spells outside the D&D construct. Spells are to a large degree the mechanic for magic in D&D. The archetypes for Druids outside of D&D might be magical, but they don't universally feature spells. Clerics likewise don't feature spells...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

D&D has been high magic since at least 1978 and in 1E it was more high magic than it is now. Pick up an official adventure from 1E and compare the magical loot to what you will find in a WOTC 5E adventure. I would guess on average there is around 5 times as much. We are playing a remake of...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

A lot of them are magical too (Aragorn and Drizzt specifically), moreover as Cream alluded to most of the non-magical archetypes come from non-magical settings. The Rangers/Regarders of Medieval England or the Scottish Rievers are probaly the best two examples of the non-magical Ranger...

D&D General Pact of the Chain + Wild Companion =?

I don't think you can remotely cast spells from your Sphinx except touch spells unless there is something I am missing. You can use their senses, but this does not overcome cover. You could cast Chill Touch with them in this fashion though, assuming they were right next to them and you would...
