D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Not quite. They upgrade their success by 1 step specifically versus incapacitation effects (or, if the effect uses an attack roll or skill check, downgrade that by 1 step). Slow, which you used as an example, isn't an incapacitation effect, so it's great against bosses. Particularly if you're a...

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

This made me think of the old World of Darkness games, where you'd put motivations on your character sheet (there was probably some high-faluting term for them I can't remember). The thing was that you'd have two of them: Nature and Demeanor. Demeanor was what you presented as, and Nature was...

Doctor Who… Xmas Special in 2026

Right. What I'm getting at is that it would be pretty annoying if the BBC makes a deal with, say, Netflix for new seasons and the old stuff (both classic and revival), but Netflix ends up with a two-season gap because of long-term Disney contracts.

Doctor Who… Xmas Special in 2026

I would have thought Disney would have gotten rights to the seasons they partially financed in perpetuity, but I could be wrong. I guess we'll know if/when they get someone else to do it for Doctor 16 and/or 17.

    Matt Colville's Community

Speaking of British slang, I remember reading some forum (might have been one of the off-shoots from the community here, or possibly even going back to the alt.fan.pratchett newsgroup) when an American said he appreciated the British exclamation "sod off!" because it was so "soft" compared to...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

The one D&D campaign I'm in still uses 5.0, so I couldn't say for certain. However, it appears to me that if you increase monster damage and PC magic healing by similar amounts, it might be a was for the day as a whole, but making in-combat healing more relevant.

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

Huh. I was just thinking that they were probably a good way to pad out page count with fewer designer resources. As an example, in Shadows of the Last War you have an outdoor "dungeon" that covers 8 pages + 1 page of map. These include seven similar encounters in different locations, one...

    Matt Colville's Community

See, that's where you're wrong, and now I'm going to tell you why... That is, I think, the core of the video. There's a whole lot about how to maintain that community, but the core is "If you want to sell something, make sure you have a community to sell to."

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I think PF2 overcompensated somewhat. The problem is the rapidly escalating numbers combined with the Incapacitation rules. Let's say you have a 5th level caster trying to do something against a 7th level creature. Your save DC is probably going to be something like 21 (level 5 + trained 2 +...

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

Some skills specify that you do roll for everything though. Piloting is one: you need to roll for both takeoff and landing, as well as any hazardous situations. There are some safeguards built in – a failure by 1 just means "a rough job", and a crit fail requires a second confirmation roll that...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I reckon it's like racing. There's definitely a lot of skill involved, both on the part of the drivers and the pit crews. But if you show up in a proper F1 car and I in a VW Beetle, I'm not winning that race no matter how skilled I am (assuming you can handle the F1 car without flying off the...

Doctor Who… Xmas Special in 2026

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a situation similar to that of the Babylon 5 spinoff Crusade on TNT back in the 90s. Crusade had perfectly respectable numbers on its own, but didn't really fit into the rest of the channel with things like wrestling. So you had plenty of people who tuned in for...

Doctor Who… Xmas Special in 2026

I at least thought I could see the money, but it might be confirmation bias. There was much more VFX, like holographic interfaces popping up and being interacted with rather than someone interacting with a screen. You had an episode where a large part of it was spent interacting with a cartoon...

I haven't watched the final video yet, but I caught Matt doing a draft version over on his Twitch channel. I think what we have here is a "Squeaky wheel gets the grease" situation. When people like a thing, there generally isn't all that much to talk about. Maybe someone does something that...

Doctor Who… Xmas Special in 2026

Basically, there were a lot of uncertainty about whether or not Disney were going to continue partnering with the BBC on Doctor Who, which in turn meant the BBC couldn't plan for further seasons – it's hard to make plans when you don't know what the budget is going to be and things like that...
