    Player skill vs character skill?

For social situations the player can say what they want to accomplish in third person. The dice can determine how well or poorly the message came across to the receiver. Or Or, at the beginning of combat, setting an ambush, etc., the DM can have the player make a History (or some other...

    Player skill vs character skill?

Why should we prevent a player who is not a good Tactician to play a characterr who is a good Tactician or to play a character more intelligent than themselves if they invest in the proper mechanics if that is their fantasy and role they want to play? We don't tell people not to play an...

    Player skill vs character skill?

I might have them roll. A high roll will do nothing, because nothing is there (edit: or maybe, they realize sooner nothing is there). However, if they roll really bad, I might increase the time they spent searching, have them do something that can alert an enemy nearby (if appropriate. Think...

    Player skill vs character skill?

Here is how I do it for finding secret doors and hidden objects. Traps would work similarly with some variation for being a trap Searching the wrong part of room will find the character nothing. Searching the area with the secret door will reveal the door a clue to the presence of the secret...

Spoilers Stranger Things Season 5 - SPOILERS

Officialy in the core books, correct. However, I do recall reading something by Gygax outside the core books (defintiely outside the PHB) regarding Dungeon Masters tailoring clerics to specific deities in the campaign with things like modifying weapon proficiencies (including allowed certain...

D&D General Thoughts about Purple Dragon Knights

Hi @I'm A Banana , Sorry to bother you with something off topic, but a couple of members have contacted me after seeing my recommendations for your Complete Handbook Conversion and failing to access the Google files through links you provided on this site. They have also told me that they tried...

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

Well, I have had two instances. The first time involved me retiring my character after the GM had my character's reason for adventuring and the resulting situation created a situation where it made sense for him to retire. The second involved the party (experienced adventurers) arriving at a...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

I am kind of in a weird spot with 5e which is not my default system when running fantasy. However, it is the version of D&D that I will run if the group wants D&D despite starting D&D around 1980, I prefer the 5e 2014 chassis to TSR D&D/AD&D. Yet, at the same time, I dislike the default...

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

OK. I don't know anything about Glicker and the Bookscan stunt. However, I also don't regularly watch Roll For Combat. I, occasionally, will click on it when it comes across my YouTube feed which is not that often.

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

What about Teos makes his conclusions stronger (Asking as I know nothing about Teos)? As I understand it, Glicker has a corporate background and has dealt with quarterly reports. I might be wrong, but I recall it being mentioned in the past.

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

Stephen Glicker also pulled out the quarterly posts. I have never had to deal with quarterly reports which is why I am curious as to others' opinions since I am there are other posters that most likely have. Yeah, since sales can also start strong and then tank. I think one of Stephen's points...

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

He didn't rely on Bookscan. He mentioned it, but at one pointed, he mentioned the limitations of Bookscan for sales now in comparison to 2014. I am curious about thoughts regarding when he talked about Hasbro's report to shareholders. He discusses 1) How things in the report were worded; 2...

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

Probably not. Overall, I like many things about 5e I may be trying to run a short session of D&D (the first time running anything since before COVID). If I do, I am going to use 2014 and, maybe, borrow a few things from 2024 that people revealed in reviews of various classes. While I like some...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

I can releate. When I was about ten or so, my friends and I, not knowing better, walked across a mudflat to get back to our campsite. I stepped in a patch of quickmud. Thankfully, my friends were able to pull me out, but I did lose one or both of my sneakers.

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

You are correct. I had 1 million in an earlier post and was looking at the wrong line on screen (visual convergence disorder) , I was looking at open window and typed 1million for 3.0. My eyes picked up 1.5 for 1e instead of line for 3.0.
