I've ruled that for falling you have to roll the distance fallen or higher on percentage dice or die. If they voluntarily jump I give them a +20% to the roll. If the roll is made and an additional saving throw at -1 for every 10 feet is made, they can walk away with damage equal to their HP...
For a difference you might consider having druids following a place spirit, such as the River Woman, Man of the Woods, etc.... Clerics could then following an emotional spirit, the Spirit of Love, Spirit of Hate, etc....

Minimally as a house rule you could compare which slots were used and reduce each spell accordingly. A slot 3 sleet storm versus a slot 5 fireball results in the sleet storm being "cancelled out" and a slot 2 fireball.
