D&D General Do you prefer more or less Skills?

I would like more skills. I prefer situations where not every PC has a chance to roll for a particular skill check. It's not a hill I would fight for though, just a small personal preference.

D&D General What is your favorite Class?

I prefer to DM, but when I play I usually run a cleric.

What is the most complex TTRPG of all time?

Combat was crazy complex, but I loved the simplicity of the skills system. In our campaigns if the adventure got to combat things had gone very wrong anyway. Just the blood loss rules alone were dizzying. Still, I have a soft spot for the game - we had a blast playing it.

What would you pay for a book?

Items I want, not just curious about: a) $45 b)$75 c)$125 d)$20/$30/$45 If it was a product that I did not know I wanted a lower price often tempts me to buy something. For example, The Game Master's Book of Random Encounters by Jeff Ashworth is a 250-page hardback book with a MSRP of $22.99...

    D&D 5E (2024) "The Future of D&D" (New Core Books in 2024!)

Games Workshop takes quite a bit of heat for not previewing their products very much and just releasing them. After wading through a lot of the comments in this thread - I can see why they use that approach. I actually think WOTC is making a mistake hinting at things three years out, but it is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D combat fun?

For me and my table - We LOVE combat. It is the reason we play D&D. We set up battlefields, use miniatures, use templates, use custom scenery, and have a grand time. For us - a lot of the D&D rules space is devoted to combat. That's almost always been true. If we want to deep dive into other...

Pogre's 2021 Miniatures and Models Thread - Yuan-ti group, Water Weird, and some Skinks.

They don't. We play mostly old school rank and file games. We've found round bases do not work great for those, but we can get by with square bases when we do play skirmish games. I still have a lot of square bases and we do 3d print bases as well. I like how round bases look - so I use them a...

"Players wanted for a Space Adventure Campaign!" What are you hoping to see?

Completely agree. I am running a group playing this as well. It is an amazing sandbox for a campaign and could go a lot of different ways.

How do you keep your GM notes?

I use google docs for everything. I print stuff off and run it out of a binder at the table. I prefer not to have my computer on the table in face-to-face games.

    Do you sell your books?

Yep. Sell books all the time. I do have a WFRP collection I hold onto, but I still get occasional use of even the 1st edition stuff. The costs of shipping has slowed down my selling more than anything.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mind Blank against Command

I would rule in favor of having Mind Blank stop Command. It is an 8th level spell to stop a 1st level spell. I can see arguments for the other side for sure.

D&D General What's the Most Valuable DM Prep Between Campaigns?

I would design a campaign setting that has lots of built in adventure hooks. Adventurers start in a city built over the ruins of a lost ancient empire. Adventurers start in a border fortress battling to survive the encroaching wilds. Stuff like that.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Just caught up. Thanks for your session reports. Good stuff!

    The long payoff

I try to do this, but never over six-and-a-half years! That is pretty impressive. I hope you share with the G.M. how much you appreciated that experience. Maybe even cut and paste your O.P. and send it to them. My campaigns with the same PCs last around 18 months these days. We continue to play...

D&D General Steal this from my campaign!

I had the PCs start as joint heirs of a border fiefdom. I created a chart for why a PC had been selected as an heir for the players who could not come up with an explanation. They had a small village and whole lot of encroaching wild space and wild things. The campaign lasted a long time and by...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Tanares, Stars Without Number, Down We Go, and more

It seemed very well presented and with that list of authors they are going to draw a lot of folks in. I am not in the market for any campaign books, but the adventure book looks interesting.

Pogre's 2021 Miniatures and Models Thread - Yuan-ti group, Water Weird, and some Skinks.

Honestly, I think that is the top way miniature painters share their work these days. I find it to be a bit too fiddly for me - I tried it for a while and did not enjoy it. I have not been on insta for a few months. Definitely where the top painters are though.

D&D General Do you play D&D (or other RPGs) with your family?

Yep. My three sons play. My wife and daughter play board games, but not rpgs generally.

Systems Where You Dread Running Combat

I'm with the OP on WFRP 4e - way too fiddly. For the campaign I finished recently we fell back to the 2e rules. Millennium's End was a game I loved, but dreaded the combat. Generally, if I don't like the combat system I won't run the game.
